Removing/Cleaning Rust????
Hey I had a quick question on removing/ cleaning some rust of a Stainless Steel Ram Horn Turbo manifold. The manifold is all good it self, its the flange (since its no stainless steel) that has some what of a surface rust forming on it. Whats the best way to remove it and to keep it off?
I know i could sand it or scotch brite it off, but whats the perfered method? Is there a certain product you guys use?
I know this isnt a the cleaning section but, figured this would be the best place to ask sense this is were people actually work with metal and build some pretty cool stuff.
Thanks in advance.
here is a pic to what im referring too.

Have it ceramic coated. They will take care of everything for you . Or you could use a metal polish that removes oxidation. It will come back but maybe not as bad as it is now. Has it been sitting for a while? Not installed?

Sand/bead blasting is normally the most effective way to get it off. You can also try something like CLR or other chemical that removes rust. The only way to keep the rust off is to have it coated in some way to keep the mild steel and air seperated.

as was already said a few times, coating it is the only way to get it gone and keep it gone. scotch brite, metal polish, CLR, vinegar, all of those will remove what is currently there, but won't stop it from coming back again. best bet is to have a coater bead blast the entire manifold, then coat it and never worry about it again

Or... if you want to coat it yourself or at least get rid of the rust... most of us cannot sandblast at home. but you CAN very easily remove ALL the rust (also hard to reach places) by the electro-chemical way. Its very easy..
1) Get a container of water where the manifold will fit all the way in (under water).
2) Add a decent amount of salt to make it easier to conduct electricity
3) Get a 12V battery charger and wire a solid plate of steel or some pins to the " + "and wire the manifold to the " - " ... let it go for a night... it will be perfectly clean with no effort.
here some pictures of how its done
