Default JB weld for tapping into oil pan and attaching downpipe to exhaust?

i got a used rev hard turbo kit for my ep3. the guy was nice enough to get me a new thing to tap into my oil pan, because he welded the original one. will JB weld work ot hold it in place and make sure nothing goes in or out? and the downpipe has a little crack in it and needs to be welded to the rest of my exhaust. will it work for those 2 things also? my mechanic teacher says hes seen people use it to repair cracked blocks, so it seems like a good idea.

bwwahaha, jb weld on the downpipe, man thats the funniest thing I heard so far today :D Try it and see how long its gonna last. The answer is, no you cant weld a cracked downpipe and definately you cant weld it to your exhaust pipe with JB weld. You know, in my 5 years of fiddling around with cars, I havent once used JB weld on anything, maybe its just me, but JB weld isnt in my book a proper method of fixing anything, let alone a cracked block.

I have used JB weld as a form of permanent thread sealant. On my oil drain in the oil pan, I didn't want to remove the oil pan so I carefully drilled the hole (with lithium grease on the bit), then tapped it to a large NPT (again with the grease), cleaned it up, and installed a fitting smothered in JB weld that then set up as strong as a true weld. Has held for 2 years without a leak.

But on a downpipe, no. JB weld is good to maybe 400°F, then it will break down chemically.

using it as thread sealer is totally different than using it to fix cracks in blocks, etc

Agreed. But Ghetto Weld has its place in any gearhead's toolchest.

yah my plan is to have it work permenatly on the oil pan, but for about a week on the downpipe till i get to a machine shop. but i can run my car without the pipe, but if i screw up with the oil pan, thats trouble, but it doesn't get too hot and it just sealent.

JB weld on the downpipe will last for about 90 seconds.

jb weld is more than adequate on an oil pan, i see no problem using it there if i were installing a brand new pan. But any bit of oil, grease, etc, it won't stick to that ****. But the downpipe is gonna see some serious heat, they do have metal to metal bonders that would work for this, some high heat apps (maybe 1600+). don't let the fact that something is a bonder fool you, you can have a bonder be stronger than a weld.
