Re: engine hoist plans
yeah well im making an 8 ton and the price of making it myself is going to be cheaper but the reason im actually doing it is to practice my fabrication skills, welding cutting ect...

if you have a ram that can lift 16000 lbs you better have it engineered right. I personally wouldnt risk the safety of everyone around you building this if you are not comfortable welding. even a 300-500lb honda engine can be deadly when its 3 ft in the air. Build a shop press or something like that. Then if it fails, it wont do it with something heavy and expensive in the air. Plus you get to test the strength of your welds everytime you use it.
most cherry pickers arent rated above 1 ton. They have a larger ram on them because of the leverage(maybe thats what you mean by 8 ton?). I know there is some calculations that have to be done because of the additional leverage caused by the long arm and the weight of an engine hanging out there at the end of it.

Re: engine hoist plans
lol. i meant i was gonna use a 8ton hydraulic ram... it was cheap.i only need it to be capable of 2 tons max. i actually am comfortable welding i took some classes a while back and i've built and engine stand that is holding up quite well. i just though the next thing to build would be an engine hoist since i need one right now. tired of renting and on top of that i have a lot of time in my hands and i just want to stay busy.

Re: engine hoist plans
HF sells hoists for so cheap, I'll never make one. The materials cost more than the price of their whole hoist.
If you really feel you need the 8 ton ram, buy the biggest HF hoist and fit your hydraulics to it.

I ordered one from HF via their website, it was literally $12 for shipping, cheaper than gas and my time to go up to the local HF and get it!

Re: engine hoist plans
I got lucky and got a free engine hoist from a guy that closed shop. But it didn't have a ram so I picked up the 10ton ram from HF like the one in the pic. ram works good! Im happy with my $50 investment.

those are prettymuch the same as the ones I took, same style also, One thing to account for is your ram size, You said you had an 8ton, but most of the ones Ive seen are only 3 ton. make sure there isnt a difference in overall length or you'll have to change the mounts a bit
