Default WATER TEMP PROBE!! Can I Install in Rad Hose? Top or Bottom?

Ive got this aftermarket water temp gauge, comes with a probe that im assuming your supposed to drill and tap the radiator for.

I would like to make it quick and easy since taking my rad out means taking my turbo and everything out, can I just slit my coolant hose and install it there maybe with some hightemp gasket to seal it a bit?

I dont see why this wouldnt work, the probe is about 2" long

Thanks

no room, its prety much touching the crossmember already

I was hoping the lower rad hose could be probed near the engine

cut the hole extremely undersize and jam it in there tight tight, throw a small bead of sealant around it

Bad Idea. Just do it right. I know a few guys that put them on the "out" of the head. that way you know instantly if you blew a head gasket because you can see temp spikes from the hot air pushing through your coolant lines.

I wouldn't just "slit" your hose to put the probe in. A couple of companies sell in-line adaptors made out of aluminum. You simply cut your upper rad. hose and insert this adaptor. The adaptor has a threaded hole in it to accept a probe. I believe AC autotechnic was one supplier of these.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...wItemThese are available in 1", 1 3/16", and 1 3/8". Measure the diameter of your radiator outlet and get the appropriate one. Much, much better idea than "slitting" you radiator hose ( )

The brand of water gauge I have isnt listed, its a fairly uncommon gauge meant for wv's i think

The brand has nothing to do with nothing. Most water temp. sensors are 1/8 npt thread--that is what the threading is in the AC Autotechnic adaptors...

Because it's thin rubber man. Think about it. What makes you think it will work?

It won't really thread, the coolant system is pressurized, and those hoses can expand alot. It WILL come out.

This sucker wont be coming out, Im gonna slit it today and jam it in there as good as I can

I think it will work because it will be a small diamter hole with a tight fitting threaded probe that is about 1/2" long going into it being sealed by a bead of jb weld and some high temp gasket

in for the
"so i did this to my radiator hose, and now my car overheated, why'd it break?" thread.

... it wont work.

also why not just use the same probe or position as the standard one?

Wheres the standard one? This is meant for a wv so i doubt it will work, Im pretty sure jbweld and high temp sealant and just a general tight fit will never come lose, I'll see what I can do tomorrow

Why even ask the question? Everyone is giving their opinion which is different than what you want to hear!! Its like you want people to tell you its going to work great when it won't. It will leak, it will look like a shitty hack job--and it hardly costs anything to do it the proper way--but for some reason you are insisting. Don't ask the question if you aren't prepared to hear what you don't want to hear......

What is the brand of gauge? Did it actually come from a VW--is it an oem part? Or is it like a VDO brand gauge? If its a VDO the probe should be 1/8" npt which will fit in the AC autotechnic hose adaptor--which is the correct way to do it--splice it in to your upper radiator hose.....
