i did the top hat extention mod....super results
i just finished the exteded top hat mod(rear only) on my 90 crx si...the results are amazing....
what i did was cut the top hat myself and took it to a welding shop who added the extra 1.5 inches for 20 bucks.....
I cut a coil off the top of each of my jamex lowering springs...they are dead coils at the top anyhow so it didnt affect except add an exra .75 or so off drop.....
I bought 2 stock struts for dirt cheap at a local pick apart and installed my modded top hats and springs back in....
in the front i did the "grind the brake line holder off the strut" mod and slid the fork up an inch on each side....
.............the result is the best rear ride i have ever had for a total of 40 bucks...and added an extra inch of drop on each corner...

That's good to hear. I bought GC top hats for the front of my civic, and they do make a world of difference. If you have the time, you should also do your front top hats. The brake line bracket trick will only serve to lower the car more if you don't have coilovers to raise back up the difference (this is where the extended travel would come from). The top hats will still give you that extra travel that makes bumps much more pleasant. Also, 88-91 chassis already has VERY limited suspension stroke, so it will make a huge difference.
One question:
Did you make sure that the section of pipe used for your top hats was large enough to fit the shock body inside? You don't want the shock body crashing into the upper mount before hitting the bumpstop...

Hopefully they used TUBING, not piping!

ya.i made sure the strut fit all the way up to the bushing....the guy welded on the inside and ground it down to make sure the strut would slide up all the way inside....the only tough part was getting the the top hat through the hole in the top of the hatch back,,,the weld was a bit thick, so i had to use a small bottle jack and some lube to push it through...went in smooth though ...ya..im going to try the same mod on the front struts soon.
