62mm Turdbox Sedan 10.1@152
So I've had an old 2.0L(84x87) sitting around for quite some time. This season we decided to put it to use.
It is a
-84mm Sleeved B18C with 9:1 compression shelf JE's and Crower rods
-JG ported GSR Head
-Ferrea Std. sized valves and Ferrea Valvetrain
-Skunk Pro1 Cams
- BDL 70mm TB
- HP Racing old *** sheetmetal intake mani
Fuel is e85
Fuel setup consists of
- Grams 2200's
- Walbro 460 in tank
- Bosch 044 under the hood
Turbo setup is
- BRMS Ramhorn, Downpipe and Dumptube
- Precision 6266 T4 .84 backside
- OBX Ebay Intercooler - BUY IT NOW 130 shipped
- Precision 46mm Wastegate
- Ebay JDM Sport Intercooler piping kit and couplers - BUY IT NOW 70 shipped
Suspension is
- Ground control Coilovers on Koni Yellows
- Shelf front spring rates
- Summit Racing 900lb rear springs
- Prothane bushings up front
- Skunk2 camber arms
Transmission is
- Stock GSR Trans
- Quaife LSD
- Exedy Twin Disk
Chassis is
- Rusted and falling apart
- Full interior
- Rear seats smell like rat urine
- Power windows, heat, cruise control
Weight with me in it was 2580 with a half tank.
Ready for it's first shakedown passes.
First pass ever in the car. Transmission mount rips on the launch(Hasport standard bushing), eyeball alignment done by my crooked eyes isn't so straight, car goes through the gears just fine and we are at wastegate(1 bar) for the first couple gears and 22-24 psi for 3rd and 4th.
10.7@138
It went downhill from there that night as on the next pass we broke the rest of the transmission mount and started losing the alternator. I did a couple more short passes to see if I can get the short track dialed in a little.
10.7 pass was a 1.68 60'. Different launch technique, tire pressure change and a few key strokes on the laptop got us down to a consistent 1.59. The track was not bad that night, some complained about being slick but I wouldn't know. I haven't drag raced in quite a while and it felt fine to me. I'm usually behind the wheel of all motor cars so the popping, and fire shooting and ludicrous speed in 4th was fun.
My guesstimate on power is somewhere in the low 600's in the low 20psi boost range.
Ok, so we did some tweaking to the cam gears, built an intake and turned up the boost to 30 and ended up running out of fuel.
We got tire spin on the dyno so I'm not sure how close we got to 800 but we were out of fuel anyhow.
We also ended up doing a real alignment, changing out the engine mount and putting fresh inserts in the mounts. Tightened up the shift linkage, put in some stiff rear springs, and febreezed the rear seats and door panels. It stopped smelling like ****.
We didn't take it back to the track right away. We ended up racing at not the track. We did well until the end of a pass where the car just slowed down and the throttle stopped responding....so we shut it down and brought it back home.
Upon inspection we found that these old *** Kenny Tran Jotech cam gears from back in 2002 broke and slipped on the intake side.
Leakdown tests show that we bent a bunch of valves in every cylinder. But the car still sounded cool. It was the end of the track season with only a questionable weekend left to run at the track. So I did what any idiot would do, throw it on the dyno and see if it's fully broken.
So we're down a clean 100whp at 8,000 rpm at the same amount of boost. Ah well, went to the track anyhow.
First and only pass of the day was a 10.1@152. The track was garbage. It was 37 degrees out and there were so many spills. We got a 1.69 60 foot on that pass. After our pass some car spilled coolant all over the track and they shut it down early. That's it for my short 2013 race season. I'll try to pull up a video. I know my buddy grabbed one on his cell phone.
Chances are i'll change the valves out, put in a rollcage, febreeze the rear seats again, and change the gas so I can set it on kill. We also might drop a little weight out to compensate for the cage. The goal is to try and be around the 2450 range with driver and keep the car streetable. If it doesn't blow up we plan on dipping our ***** into the 9's.
See ya in 2014 ladies!
Big ups to Sumo, Caveman, the handsome guys at ProFunction, the bomb *** alignment from one6, and all my other friends and family who came out and helped with the car.

How'd it run in the snow? The water injection from the headlight intake might have helped it out? haha
I wouldn't put a cage in it. But then again that is just absurd and completely unsafe. Then again the not putting a cage in it statement is coming from me and I do not believe that all street cars have to have a cage even if they are fast at the track.

You're preaching to the choir. I hate having a main hoop inches from my head and i hate the look it gets when people look inside the car. It makes it too "serious". We may plan on travelling to other tracks out of state and if we do get the car to go fast we'd love to see how it does with other 62mm cars. 62mm seems to be the new hotness.
I sometimes forget why people get bent out of shape about running a car with no cage. I mean, bikes do not have cages and they have potential to be fast.
I started to go with a 62mm turbo, but I happened to be at a race and Precision had a booth there and just so happened to have a 67mm for a good deal sitting there. So I scooped it up.

All I got to say is, at some of the tracks I have attended I am not sure they would care much about anything safety wise with the car. As long as it doesn't spill on the track, then run it.

Honestly, I could care less. Just saying.
Either one of two things is going to happen. People run the car on the street with no cage which could potentially be more dangerous or they run it on the track with no cage. You know the risks and dangers either way.
Tuners should stop tuning high hp setups that see any street time and do not have a cage and parts companies should stop selling.......Ohhh, wait, you do get little warning labels with some of the parts that say "for off road vehicles only" don't you? I guess we are all doomed.
Either way, I like seeing the beat up lower budget cars that occasionally get posted in here that people have fun with. I really do not have a reason why, but they sometimes intrigue me. Sorry to get off topic with the safety and roll cage rant.

Tank is stock. Fuel lines are stock up to the firewall where its converted to a simple -6 into the 044 and a -8 to the fuel rail. Base pressure is 80. Base pressure didn't make so much of a difference once we really started pushing it, the pumps/lines/voltage/etc. couldn't keep up.
I hope ID releases their pumps before the season starts, one of those in tanks and one of those in lines would pull a premium for race wars.

Home-built budget cars are where it's at.
