I have an engine block that I want to turn into a coffee table. I plan on painting it with a single stage metallic paint from Summit.

What will the outcome be if I skip priming and paint over the bare metal/factory paint (this is an iron VW block). It's going to be indoors so I figure it won't need to be as durable as a vehicle finish, but I also don't want the paint to chip off if I touch it.

get it blasted somewhere quick probably like 40-60 bucks and then just spray it. if not just pressure wash it real good use some purple power and then some brake kleen. run thru it with a red scuff pad and the spray.

Well there is a product called No sand Its a gloss remover (most Automotive Paint supply places have it) .. I painted a motor for Gates belts for Sema and used single stage. Came out pretty nice, and even. When painting with a spray gun, you need to paint at about a 45 deg angle and make sure you get all the nooks. If you use chemicals to clean make sure you flush it with plenty of water and make sure you get all the grime and such off.
