hey guys i was wondering has anyone ever attempted to do a simple rebuild with the car on a lift and dropping the oil pan and the side cover , my si has 120k and i never have enough time to take a full day to myself, i run a shop and normally rip everything out but need to save some time, just going to replace mainbearings,rod bearings, and rings thanks

How do you get the crank off without removing the transmission?

As a former shop foreman, I've known a few mechanics who have replaced bearings and other internal engine components with the vehicle on a lift and the engine still in the car, but as a rule, it really makes the job harder than it has to be. Sometimes it's done when the engine needs a faulty internal component replaced to get the car back on the road, but it's NOT any way to do a proper engine rebuild.

If you're worried about 'down time', then the best method is to buy a rebuildable used engine and take whatever time is neccessary to complete a thorough and careful rebuild on it. Once finished, you can make the most of your available shop time by pulling the exisiting engine out and dropping in your rebuilt one. That way, you're not cutting corners, and you gain the peace-of-mind that comes from knowing that the job is done ONCE, and done RIGHT.

well i have to replace the clutch in it anyways so the trans will be out i always rip it out from the bottom its real easy im sure i can do it u just dont want to take all the ac electrical exc out when i can prob do the clutch and rebuild in 4 or 5 hours vs all day if its completly ripped out

Replacing the clutch and simultaneously performing a couple of internal engine repairs is one thing, but replacing a few bearings is not an engine rebuild. A correctly done engine rebuild involves dissassembly, inspection, cleaning, machine work, measuring and precision re-assembly. You can't accomplish that with the engine still in the car.
