What about filling the new filter with oil before mounting to the engine?

You do not need to fill the filter with oil. You only need to lubricate the rubber on the new filter with oil before mounting it.

to each his own. just takes that much longer to get oil pressure up if it has to fill the filter.

Filling it with oil has been debated time and time again. I think the pressure that comes when you crank it combined with the fact that the engine is normally not at a hot temperature when you crank it over after changing the oil which means the clearances aren't as tight means it's not a big deal to have to fill it before throwing it on, imo.

Since there's got to be some oil left in it I believe it's safe to start it. There is no way of putting that filter full of oil on there... I know people do it on turbo cars so they don't overheat/dry the turbo.

I would suggest that to add 'check for old filter rubber ring, make sure it is not still sticking near the drain plug.' It happened to me and oil shot out to my entire driveway. lol.

well, you should always wipe the oil filter mating surface on the block to make sure it is clean, this will also tell you if your old filter washer is stuck if you didn't notice when removing the old one. But a good note to add

also, in step 6 you say to "Hand tighten oil filter as tight as you can with your hand. Then I recommend further tightening 1/8th of a turn. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN!" I find this to be to general because everyone's strength is different.

When installing the new oil filter you have a couple of options for tightening. If you have the oil filter cap and a torque wrench torque the new filter to 16 lbs-ft. If you don't, once the oil filter's rubber washer has made contact with the block, turn the filter 7/8-1 turn.

Another good point... I couldn't find any torque specs for the filter, so I went by standard practice. Added!

Ha. I'm always worried that with such a high-mileaged car (> 115k) that synthetic will mess with my seals. I've heard horror stories about this, and just haven't made the jump. I know there is a ton of information on the web regarding this, just don't know what the track record is for our cars. I also don't track my Accord ( ) ... and take good care of her. Either way, don't wish to digress, but anybody have a quick pointer for using full synthetic in a car such as mine?

Just a couple tips. It's easier to hand tighten and hand loosen with the filter hot. If you want to take it off with your hand it's best to simply loosen it when it's hot just barely, then let it sit so the oil runs out into the sump then change it out later.

It's my first winter for my 93 accord , and I had a few questions. Should I use a specific type of oil ? I know I need 5w-30 , but Ive seen high mileage , synthetic and all the other types .and should I worry about changing coolant ? Thanks , oh and if theres any other information that could be useful please let me know ^^
