Re: Rich777's B16 engine build
I basically did that on the first startup. I have a feeling something is blocking the oil passages (like a piece of silicone/rtv). I'm also pretty damn sure the foreign particles has come from the recent sump/pan I installed (I must have missed some steel filings when I was cleaning it )
Rods:
Mains:
I've gave the crank another look over and it doesn't look to bad. There are some very light surface marks on it that may or may not need polishing out. But at the most; all it will need is a polish (thankfully).
So there you go people - learn from my mistake PLEASE and ALWAYS ensure everything is spotless. It kills me to know that I've been beat by something I tried so hard to avoid, but hey, that's just reality. The only free time I can commit is a few hours on a Saturday afternoon so it's going to take a while to get it up and running again.

Yep, tell me about it. I was so damn close as well. I've just been at a constant battle with the thing since I built this engine. It's like it wants to test me to see how far I'll go with it before giving up (which I never will ).
Thank god I found it now anyway and not on the dyno @ 9000rpm. That would of been messy.
BTW, the Surfer is A-OK. I always run a separate oil filter for the Turbo.

Yeah, that come to my mind as well. I guess we can all learn from each other.
I'd like a second opinion on the bearing if possible guys (just to confirm my conclusion). If anyone notices anything else then please say. Or feel free to express a theory on the failure patterns (note the main order is from 1-5).

Thats how mine looked. I had used ACLs. Like i said earlier i ended up align honing the block and then i used OEM bearings. I didnt like how the ACL's set up. Got a picture of the filter setup for your turbo?

It's this exact filter http://www.europerformance.co.uk/pag...product=245819
Did you check how the crank spun in the block the first time you assembled the engine ?

I had everything balanced though (including pistons and rods). I don't like how that first main has worn as well. I'll have a better idea when I've got the lot out. Looks like we're all in the same boat man

I'm hoping it becomes more obvious when I tear it down completely and will confirm my assumption.
I'm glad I never ran those "race" bearing from ACL. The whole lot would of been fucked if I did as the shavings of them are tough. The reason there was no tell tail signs with the oil pressure been low or the engine knocking is because the bearings have only lost the material from the centres. If I would of carried on it driving I'm pretty sure that rod would of worked its way outwards and failed first and then the rest would of gone with it.

This is a simple case of improperly cleaned oil passages.
This is what I do; I use pressurize warm water from the oil pump out port to the filter block using the right size rubber hose. Then I run pressurized water again for 10 minutes from the block oil filter threaded fitting.
You would then see water coming out of all oil passages. The crank should also be flushed that way. Water is very good for flushing metal filling that might have come from an engine failure.
Then I dry everything up with compressed air. If you do that you will never have problem again with dirty oil passages sending **** to your bearings.

I use a rifle bore cleaning kit to clean all of the oil passages in the block
I also drill out the pressed in ***** on the crank, clean the passages with solvent and another bore brush and them I tap the holes and install plugs.

Nah, what ever has caused this wasn't from the original assembly. I thoroughly flushed the oil gallerys out with a hose and a jet/power wash. We'll see anyway. I'll let everyone know... it is what it is it..

It really does look like a ton of trash went through the engine. I can't think of any other way the wear would be all the way around like that, especially so centered in the middle of the bearing.

Re: Rich777's B16 engine build
Thank you sir. My car has been running naturally aspirated for over 1500 miles before I took it apart to turbocharge it and everything seems to be okay before I took her apart. However I never cut open my oil filter like you did Rich. I hope that everything will hold together when I put her on the dyno but if something lets go on the dyno then so be it. I will just rebuild. I am like you Rich, I will never let go of my car. I plan on keeping her forever. Good luck to you on your rebuild Rich.
