Icon7 Rich777's B16 engine build

Hey guys,

I'm going to be putting together a 400whp+ B16 over the next few months. I have taken some pictures so far of where i am with it which i will be updating in the next couple of days.

The spec's will be (i'll add if i've forgot anything):

B16a Block
B18c4 head (GSR)
Darton Flanged Sleeves
Mahle 9.5:1 81.25mm pistons
Crower rods
ARP head studs
ATI street damper
B16B Flywheel
Comp stage 4 clutch
Full bottom end balance (including pistons and rods)
OEM bearings
Brian crower valves (after speaking to them they said they'd be fine for me)
Brian crower valve keepers
Brian crower valve springs and steel retainer's
Ferrea bronze valve guides
Ferrea stem seals
Silver Surfer turbo
Go autoworks mini ram/screamer/3" downpipe
3" custom exhaust
3 angle valve job (with valve sping seated pressures checked)
Blended valve guides
Head & block skimmed (to ensure flat surface)
Block lined honed if needed.

At the moment i've just stripped and inspected the head and block and had them chemically cleaned (more pictures to follow). They are both in top condition and show no sign's of major wear or any damage. All bearings looked exactly how i'd expect them to look in a well looked after engine with no tell tail sign's of anything that would concern me.

More to come....

Nice my tuner has a very similar setup
B16 block
Darton sleeves
Endyn forged rods and pistons
Endyn built and ported GSR head GSR cams
GSR intake mani
S300
TO4E turbo
Dont really know all the details ,making 380whp on 10psi with plenty of room for more power. It is a very fast EM1.
I want a Silver Surfer turbo too. Nice looking build.

Being a pilot for an airline does not give you much free time but, Ive finished all the work on the car. Ignition fixed and got a vibrant intercooler. Got the race gas, waiting this week for dyno day. I will post the updates :D

Rich

Just curious to know who is doing the flanged sleeves that's all.
I've had at least 4 blocks sleeves over the past 7 or 8 years with the same flanged sleeves.
Just remember they will machine away a vast majority of the sleeve support and the top of the new flanged sleeve doesn't have the integral support like the MID's.
What are they proposing to do?

Hey EddieCRX,

What do you mean by "proposing to do?" the way how they will install the sleeves ???

A few mouth watering pictures of Greg's (GO-AUTOWORKS.COM) & Mac's (TheShodan) work (these pictures are from back in May)... & one of my bay before it fitted my Tial 50mm.

I have a entry level kit PTE on a customers LSVTEC.. Nice kit. Although its not as "easy" to install as greg made it to be. Take your time, and double check everything, it should be a nice build. Goodluck!

To be honest i've had a complete nightmare with the oil return because of how low the manifold sits the turbo... Just when i though i got it right, i never... So i fitted a high quality scavenge pump to pump the oil back to the sump.

Good to hear from you anyway man Hope all is well.

I'm after some opinions on whether or not i should run the Rocket motorsport (GEN 2) springs and titanium retainer's i have or sell them and go for the Brian crower's with the steel retainers. This whole "wear" debate with titanium retainers is driving me crazy... I personally have inspected a few different sets of titanium retainers that were not a snap fit and they all showed signs or wear underneath. From what i have been told there is no wear issue with "snap fit" titanium retainers. Any thoughts people ??? What experience do you guys have with snap fit retainer and signs of wear ??

Thank you VERY much for your time

from what i understand when using titanium or aluminum retainers is to make sure you have a snap fit design like Rocket Motorsports springs and Supertech and maybe skunk2 (which is what i have). If they aren't snap fit they can wiggle inside the springs and wear that way. The Snap fit usually give you close to OEM longevity.

Shim the oil pump..just a word of advice.

Looks good.. double check and recheck everthing. Use new gaskets on everything and make sure to double check torque specs.

I check this thread from time to time.. if you need any help, you know how to contact me.

That pump has been modified by Endyn to increase oil flow at high RPM, reduce pumping losses & reduce the strain on oil pump. Take a closer look at the pictures

Don't worry man they'll be a load of checking done on this by me and my machine shop. I will be following clearances strictly to ensure reliability and that it lasts. This engine is going to go through this process when all parts are gathered:

1. Machine work and clearances checked at the machine shop
2. Engine cleaned by me with a jet wash/power wash & degreaser
3. Dummy assemble by me with all clearances checked again & valve/cam timing checked
4. Disassemble & extra machining if needed.
5. Everything sent off to be hot tanked
6. Cleaned again by me with jet wash/power wash & degreaser
7. All clearances checked, valve timing checked & engine assembled
8. Painted

Some might see me as over the top... Other's may not... This is how i think a engine should be assembled & built.

Whats your opinion on my post above about titanium retainers ?
