Hi,

I need to replace my clutch master cylinder. I generally have the Honda dealer do all services, since they have a reasonable labor rate ($80). When I called in, they told me that it would take 4 hours of labor to replace it. I made sure that they were talking about the master cylinder and not the clutch/trans. They told me it would be 4 hours for a total of $320 before taxes.

Does this sound reasonable? I searched and it seems that some people can do it in about 30 minutes (if they did it before).

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Wow, I changed mine by myself in under an hour, I suggest you do the same, search for write-ups on here.

sounds like the dealership is going nuts on you.

reminds me of them changing brake pads, padas=$50 labor=$300 you should change it yourself, and remember to bleed the system.

It's two nuts on the firewall - easy to get to with a 12mm ratcheting wrench - and a stud /cotter pin connection at the pedal. You can do it

EDIT: you should look up "bench bleeding" before you slap the new one in there

holy crap, $320 just for a clutch master cylinder? I changed mine for about $40 and like 30 min of my time.

I guess I'll try to do it myself. The thing is, the dealer often gives fair prices - their timing belt change, parts and labor, is $209.00 plus tax. I'm thinking that there may be a misunderstanding, but I don't want to take a chance. I'll try to fix it this weekend.

Maybe they misheard you and thought you said the clutch? I had mine done at a shop once and it didnt cost me anywhere near that. For sure you could do it yourself. Pick up a helms manual that can walk you through it.

Speaking of hte stealership, i took my 99 si, to get a new clutch put in. They wanted 400 for parts, and 600 for labor? i was like wtf 1grand for a clutch install, i just left.

Yes the procedure is the same. The clutch master cylinder is easier to replace than it is to bleed. The bleed takes the most time because each pump of the pedal only moves a little bit of fluid. It takes forever for the air to make it from the master cylinder to the bleed port on the slave cylinder. And god help you if you let the reservoir go dry...

I'm sure bench bleeding the CMC before connecting the hard line would make the process that much easier (though I don't do it)...

It's seriously a simple process, but I believe the dealerships labor estimation. I left my Element at the big "H" to get a CMC replaced under warranty and it took those retards 3 days to get the job done (and it blew out within a month).

I am getting charged 398$ today ... then i looked up parts and there is even a video online for this ... 30 min to 1 hour job!! parts 25-75$ depends on what brand you buy..

Great advice, everyone who owns a car should have a service manual.

OP, take your time, don't get overwhelmed. You can replace it yourself for sure, maybe make yourself feel a little better and have someone there with you for an extra set of hands/eyes
