What should I get to tow my CRX?
I recently decided to make my ZC powered CRX into an autocross track *****. The only problem with that is I will no longer be able to drive her to the track legally. Metro (LVMPD can kiss my ***) does not like me anyways, so why tempt fate with an illegal non-registered vehicle and over-zealous pigs when I can legally tow it and just avoid the hassle outright?
My big issue is I do not want to fork over huge amounts of cash for a full sized tow rig when this would be the only reason I would use it's towing and hauling capability. It's only other duty would be driving me to work roughly 2 miles round trip 5 days a week.
I was just going to get a little beater truck and front wheeled dolly to tow my baby to and from the track, but a friend suggested an old police vehicle fitted with a hitch. If you guys have any other suggestions, please let me know. What do you think?
FYI, a new vehicle is not an option at this point and I will berate any suggestions of buying a Ridgeline new or used.

if you're using a front wheel dolly, doesn't the vehicle being towed have to be registered?

A crown vic could pull it with no problem. We used to pull our 18ft boat with my dad's old company crown vic...no issues at all. Then we got a bigger boat and a truck.
I'd still go with a used F150, Silverado, Tundra(or even a T100). I know the car is pretty lightweight...but I'm not a big fan of small trucks towing vehicles. Although, with a dolley instead of a trailer...there is less weight involved. If you go with a small truck, get the bigger engine. The fuel costs will be negligible with such a short commute.

I had a Crown Vic, they towed things great but they gas mileage is horrible. The V6s in the trucks will be fine for towing something as light as a CRX

yeah, but a truck has a higher stance and is designed to tow vehicles. I mean he doesn't need a v8 to pull 2000 lbs.

I will not be selling any parts (interior or otherwise), if you are seeking EF CRX parts, please check the classifieds. I prefer craigslist, as I purchased this lilttle gem from an ad in craigslist for $750 . Happy hunting!
To whomever posted a ridgeline as a suggestion, you need to be shot because apparently you do not follow instructions.
As for pictures of my CRX, you will be disappointed as I did not make this thread to indulge your random need for photos. Your request has been denied as it has no bearing on my need for a reliable and inexpensive tow vehicle.

As entertaining as this would be, she has her own vehicle to pull to the track so I can have something proper to beat instead of the clowns with their 5.0s and such.

I've only towed with a tahoe. It did the job considering the part that - the car I towed was like a gazillion tons.
Driven an f150, f350.
I think you should get something that has more towing power than you need.

Not neccessarily. As long as the dolly is registered as a trailer, I can tow whatever I want.

I agree, but the vehicle only weighs 1967 lbs with a half tank of gas without a driver (as it would be towed) and the dolly is only 250 lbs. I do not require nor do I desire a full size truck and will flatly refuse an SUV for this duty (personal beliefs). I know that a reasonable I-4 or V6 is all that is needed for this light duty tow, but the thing to keep in mind is that cost is also an issue. A used police car will only cost in the range of $500-$3000 dollars dependant on condition and a reasonable full sized truck will run between $5000-$15,000 plus terrible insurance costs compared to a light truck or mid-full sized sedan. This leads me to my primary preference for a used cop car or a mid-light truck.

You might want to check out the RR/AX forum.
There are countless threads on what vehicles are good and what suck for towing.
Considering thats the forum where people are much like yourself and tow vehicles to the track and this is a forum for general discussion.

An i4 or a small v6? Have you ever towed around anything before? What about your spare tires, tools, jack etc? That all counts.
A friend of mine used a 1995 Toyota 4Runner, manual V6 to tow an EG hatch on a dolly.
It burned out the clutch and blew the radiator very quickly. Nevermind how much it struggled to get up a hill and braking was scary. And the 4Runner was in perfect running condition prior.

F150 V8 2wd is the cheapest vehicle to insure in the US. Maintenance costs are low, and yeah, they range from 7grand(98-00) on up. But, it would be a decent commuter for such short trips. I've always thought it is good to keep a truck handy, especially if you have a home or bigger toys.

I vote jeep cherokee even though you don't want an SUV. It will get the same mileage as a truck, and you can carry stuff in it without worrying about it getting wet, and you can lock it up. Would hold another set of wheels and tires. They are pretty reliable. I'm currently on my 3rd cherokee, and have never had any trouble out of them.

I don't see how you could place S10 and GMC Sierra on the same vote line. . . one is midsized, the other is full sized.
You could pick up an enclosed trailer for around $1200 and a decent used full sized V6 2WD truck for around $3k.
$4200 total investment and during your off time, you could rent the trailer out to other people and the truck would have far greater uses than just hauling your car to the track.

1. I agree I should have stated "generic GM truck", but I didn't.
2. I don't want an enclosed trailer as it would cost more money than I am willing to spend at this time and I already have the dolly.
3. a decent V6 truck is truly worth looking into, but I don't know which ones have the best reliability as this would be my first truck for utility purposes.

A jeep is a decent suggestion and greatly appreciated, but I will still take the anti-SUV stand in regards to any vehicle designed for off-road use and used only for street duty as this would be. I would still take a decent mid-light truck or full sized RWD sedan over an SUV any day as they are not designated or sold as off road vehicles.

True insurance on an F150 may be inexpensive, but where are you from, Idaho? I guarantee it is cheaper where you are compared to Nevada to insure a full sized truck based in an urban area.

Duly noted, and I will look into a diesel alternative. They do tend (on average) to run ALOT longer and with much better fuel effiiency than a standard gasoline powered V8 beast.

Re: (VegasEFHB)
finding a diesel truck on a budget might be a little tough. i know you said your "only" pulling 1900lbs but i seriously wouldnt go with less then a v8 or diesel, thats just me. towing uphill without enough power sucks, and downhill without enough brakes, thats just scary.
