Cornering grind going into 3rd gear
The car is a 92 Civic Hatchback, with a stock B16A with Hasport mounts, and some aftermarket torque mounts. The tranny is a Type R LSD tranny 4.7 using new Honda MTF. When corning the car at the track and shifting from 2nd to 3rd with moderate shifting speed the car would grind even shifting at 6000rpm. I was wondering if it could be that I need stiffer bushing on the linkage? I am using stock bushing on both linkage right now. Any ideas? Thanks

try shifting in a zig zag (sideways "z") from 2 to 3 instead of a straight line from 2 to 3. I read somewhere that the grind is due to 2nd not fully disengaging before going into 3.

Re: Cornering grind going into 3rd gear
I usually do all my braking and shift in a straight line. Its just I was doing a cool done lap and it happened and it got my attention. I have read people switching to diff fluid and then went back to Honda MTF.

I was under the impression that the general concensus was the new version of Honda MTF is garbage. It has certainly been garbage from my personal experience.

I had a slight 3rd gear grind in my D series transmission and switched to the GM syncromesh stuff. Haven't had a grind since.

Thanks for the tip on New Honda MTF not being so great. I'll probably go with Redline MTL or MT-90, which one do you guys prefer.

I've been using Redline and love it. I don't remember which one, unfortunately. Search in the RRAX archives a little, there's been discussion of which one to use. Something with the additives.

I use Torco MTF or Torco RTF depending on the application. Both work great for me.
I have also used GM Syncromesh with success, but it must be p/n 12377916

Re: Cornering grind going into 3rd gear
landrover mtf is much better than honda mtf,
could you be putting excessive side pressure/weight on the shifter when turning causing it to select between 3rd and 5th???

Re: Cornering grind going into 3rd gear
I had a simillar situation a few years ago. At the time, I was attending a lot of open track days at Willow Springs, Streets of Willow. Entering the bowl in the back half of the track (running CW) I would be in 2nd and have to shift to 3rd while still in the bowl. I would grind 3rd every time and eventually killed my synchro. In retrospect, I should have been in third entering already and should not have needed to shift.
Anyways, like what was should earlier... .the fix is easy for now. Just avoid shifting mid corner.

Re: Cornering grind going into 3rd gear
happened to me all the time with one craptastic gearbox I had.
I always thought it was due to the shift lever being torqued-on during cornering and me getting in on the power. Unrelated to oils.

Re: Cornering grind going into 3rd gear
I just put in some Torco MTF with some Energy shifter bushings still grinds. I'll probably be replacing the 3rd/4th synchro, hub and sleeve end of this year. I'll just shift slow for now.
