clear coating polished surfaces? rattle can + si wheels
picked up a set of worn si wheels, polished them.
They are going to be my winter wheels, Unfortunately for some this is no problem.
I live in chicago where salt eats cars.
I picked up a can of rustoleum clear wheel paint, in hopes of protecting the finish over the winter, wasnt to confident it would hang onto the polished surface real well so I figured Id ask.
or should I just polish and wax?
thanks

I doubt it will stick very well. The wheels originally had a machined face, with the machined lines available to help the clear stick.
Call places that offer powder coating services, as some of them have clear powder coating.
Otherwise, like all polished wheels, its polish and wax, and repeat regularly.

I think you're right that it won't stick if polished, but perhaps there is a grit that won't show scratches after being covered with clear, but will still have good adhesion. What grit that is...well I have no idea. Maybe around 600 or so.

nah Im at 2000+ at this point.
even wet 2000 grit without a good buff shows scratches.
May just rock em without clear for fall.

Yeah, 2000 grit WITHOUT clear shows fine scratches, but you gotta figure the clear will fill a lot of that. There has got to be a certain grit that still allows the clear to 'bite' on to the surface, but will also fill scratches. That's where I was suggesting 600. If you could find an extra wheel, that would be good to play around with. You could sand sections with different grits, label them and then shoot the whole wheel with clear to see what it looks like.

well i know that when doing a spot job on a car, they usually sand the surrounding areas with 1000 grit and the clear sticks fine...not sure if any higher than that will work

nah thats a picture while I was wetsanding those areas prior to painting them.
they're are all good now.
but I may just have no choice,
-powder coat, more than I paid for the wheels...
-zoop seal, polished aluminum sealer also expensive and must be applied regularly
-Polish and wax regularly.
and Im going with # 3, Id hate to use the clear rattle can on the polished surfaces have it peel then have to strip it all again. Taping off all the pie cuts was a pain.
not to mention they are just winter wheels, the salt couldnt possibly eat the aluminum to the point a good polish wouldnt fix.
thanks guys, if anyone has any experience with just a carnuba wax through a harsh winter let me know if its going to work.
