Default single stage repaint

long story short i bought a new car (new to me) and it was in an front end collision, repaired with aftermarket oem body parts (whole front end) and repainted a single stage red. the cars a 97 civic coupe btw. i want to repaint it. not sure if i want to stick to the oem red or do another color. but the main question is can i basically scratch up the single stage paint and reshoot the new 2 stage color/clear or does the single stage have to be compeltely removed? thanks

heres a picture of the car after a few changes and a light wash/wax.

yes you can just scuff up the single stage paint and just reshoot it with the new paint. I actually just did this to a Mustang a few weeks ago

x2, just scuff the old stuff. If you go with the same color, you only need to reprime repair areas as opposed to priming the whole thing for a new color.

it's even pointless to primer the whole car if you're doing a color change. Most of the time you can just scuff and shoot even when doing a full color change unless if you're going from dark to light, then it'd be a little easier to just primer the whole car that way you can do less coats of the base color

depending on the color you decide on shoot a light coat of sealer. this will help with new color paint coverage and hide any light sand scratches you may create while sanding. goodluck

Just give it a good wet sand with 400 grit, sand out all your da marks you have and anything else. If you want to get it really straight with no waves in the body for the new paint go ahead and use a good filler primer down the car and get a sanding block i personally just use a peice of a 2 x 2 and use it for a blocker and wet sand with it and it will make sure your car is nice and straight. Usually put 3-4 coats of filler primer on and then blocking it down is going to take awhile but totally worth it. It sucks when someone has a good paint job but failed to take the time to do good prep work and blocking and the whole side of the car has waves all the way down it. After that like they said in their posts make sure to use a sealer, dont expect a sealer to fill in marks as stated above it wont unless you put on a crap ton of coats and thats stupid to do anyway thats why theres filler primer. And also dont use a single stage again its crap all of it is, always use a good base/ clear its a couple bucks more and worth every pennie. Single stages are only good for a quick paint job to sell a car otherwise worthless. As for the paint on your trim about the only way to get that off is use very small amount of thinner on a peice of cloth, it depends on how long the car has been painted for on how well it comes off and the down side is will dry out your trim if you use to much, so kind of a double edged sword because it will come off but might dry out the rubber trim.
