Default 2002 Odyssey crankshaft position sensor trouble

Changed timing belt on 2002 Odyssey. Disconnected the negative battery cable. Did not touch the crankshaft position sensor. All back together fine, started and idled fine. Put it in gear for a test drive and started rolling. Then it started.........limp mode..........check engine light, traction control light.

Drove to autozone for a code check. It showed CPS out.

Took it apart and checked to be sure nothing went amiss during assembly. Checked timing marks just to be sure no slips. Found fluid on the sensor from when I spilled power steering fluid during disassembly. (yes, I know, didn't NEED to disconnect power steering hose but I did to make more room for my big fat hands).

Cleaned up the fluid and replaced crank position sensor with new one. Disconnected negative battery cable again before disassembly. Assembled very carefully. Reconnected battery. Started fine, ran smooth until I revved it up to 2500 RPM. Then it started again, limp mode and lights.

Any clues? Suggestions? Secret tips? Should I hold my jaw to the left while rolling my eyes to the right?

I'm stumped!

Found this procedure elsewhere online. Wonder if it will do the job?

ECM/PCM Idle Learn Procedure
The idle learn procedure must be done so the ECM/PCM can learn the engine idle characteristics.

Do the idle learn procedure whenever you do any of these actions:

Replace ECM/PCM.
Reset ECM/PCM.
Update ECM/PCM.
Replace or clean the throttle body.

NOTE: Erasing DTCs with the HDS does not require you to do the idle learn procedure.

Procedure

1. Make sure all electrical items (A/C, audio, lights, etc.) are off.

2. Reset the ECM/PCM with the HDS.

3. Turn the ignition switch ON (II), and wait 2 seconds.

4. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 rpm (min-1) without load (in Park or neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, or until the engine coolant temperature reaches 90 °C (194 °F).

5. Let the engine idle for about 5 minutes with the throttle fully closed.

NOTE: If the radiator fan comes on, do not include its running time in the 5 minutes.

6. Verify on the HDS data list that the idle learn procedure is complete.

Check to make sure the tone ring is installed correctly, the same for the sensor, check the wiring carefully for any breaks, shorts, opens, etc (check for corrosion in the plug as well) triple check your mechanical timing. Ohm out the sensor (the values should be in the service manual)

This isn't an Odyssey but it'll do for illustration purposes. The toothed wheel in the picture is the tone ring.

There is no tone ring towards the outside of the toothed gear around which the timing belt runs. There may be one between the gear and the engine case, but it was never removed. The only device that mounts to the outside of the gear is a brass retaining washer to keep the timing belt from rubbing the plastic cover.

Have tried the procedure again, same failure.
Strange thing. Always starts on cold engine. Will NOT start on warm engine.

Driving me nuts!

There has to be one, but it may be on the inside as you said. The tone wheel is what the sensor uses for input.

Have you tried checking the resistance of the new sensor? It's possible it was bad out of the box. Check the wiring between the sensor and the ECU for opens and shorts.....
