new rear pads and pushing in caliper
ok i'm trying to put pads on the rear of my 92 prelude. the new pads are of course thicker and i can't push the caliper piston in, in order to get the caliper over the new pads. i'm following the factory service manual and am still stumped. any help would be great! thanx

caliper spreader or (not sure if it is the same on the back brakes as it is for the fornt ones) but I just used a vise and slowly pushed the caliper boot back in before I re-installed my front pads.

You have to turn the pistons in on the REAR calipers by getting a wide flat screwdriver or scraper into the slots on the piston, and simply turn them in enough so the new pads will be accepted over the rear rotors. Don't keep trying to force them back by pressing or you will damage them, turning them in is the correct procedure.

hey, i got a '98 and had the same problem, not 100% sure if this is the case but i had to rotate the piston clockwise and "screw" it in. You might need a special tool though, i'd be careful with it, i used a piece of steel with vice grips to turn it. Hope that helps.

britishlude: u sure? cuz i tried turning the piston and it turned but only 90 degrees then it wouldnt go anymore. In that 90 degrees it did not move inward at all.

Yes, you turn the rear caliper pistons in as opposed to pushing them in. That's why they have a plus sign to put a tool into...

turn the cross sectioned groove on the piston clockwise, make sure e-brake is off.
pressing only works with the front piston in my experience.

thats wat i did. turned the piston clockwise. i'll try again to turn them. if that does not work then i'm pushing them in with the tool i rented from autozone. i'll test them cautiously to see if they work afterwards. i'm planning on replacing all four calipers soon anyway with new stock ones.

Get some brake cleaner and clean as much rust / crap off the piston sides as you can, it will make the piston much easier to turn into the piston seals. Also look around and get the best fitting tool you can find to go into the slots preferably wide enough to fit both sides at once, you should find it much easier to turn them in although they arn't always easy.

Re: new rear pads and pushing in caliper (britishlude)
holy ****. i did it. of course as u guys said i could not Push them in. i ended up turning one in but jesus christ it was not easy. only one side was very hard to turn. i was expecting the same when i went to the other side but it just turned like butter. thanks for all the help guys!!!!! oh and i found a little tip that makes it slightly easier: take off the two bolt bracket that holds the brake line onto the upright. Gives u much more room to work with. this is for REAR BRAKES ONLY!!!! cuz i noticed some people were talking about front brakes in here.
