advice before a purchase on 5th gen
Hey guys.. i need your opinion on should i make this purchase or not. Im formally a 93 vtec lude owner. sold it after an accident now im lookin into a 5th gen. I found this silver 1997 5th gen selling for $4500. it has 149K miles , he claims its highway miles.
This is what he listed ;
1997 Honda Prelude in immaculate condition, but needs a little work.
149K highway miles, one non-smoking owner. Maintained by the book, with all service records. Never in an accident.
5-speed manual, sunroof, AC, power windows and locks, ABS, AM/FM/CD, cruise control, alarm system. Everything works.
The car has a cracked windshield caused by some rust around the windshield. The rust needs attention before the windshield can be replaced. Also uses a quart of oil every 600 miles or so.
Questions... Cracked windshield and rust .. Bad combination.. is it easy to fix?
2nd question... is 600 miles a quart reasonable or is it assumed theres a leak?

damn, sounds like you need to fix a few things with the motor. Ask for any reciepts for mantience that's been done to it such as T-belt change, oil changes, tires, ect.

does it sound like its been thru a lot in its life time? i mean like is 600 miles a quart even reasonable? cuz i know ludes burn oil but thats a lot of oil. thats losing 5 quarts of oil in 1 oil change.

rust is like cancer... you can get rid of it. but if you don't get it all and know you got it all. it has a very high chance of coming back again. so if you know a good body shop that does some really good work then you have a chance of getting rid of it.. but that will run you... and for a quart of oil every 600.. I would say thats a little excessive..

Sound like its been through a hell of a lot. Find out the extent of the rust around the windshield. If it can be fixed and the windshield replaced for say under $500, I would buy it and do a swap. Offer him $3800 though. Part out the engine that is in it and buy a JDM swap.
My 2 cents

a quart of oil every 600 in reality i very excessive, find out if its leaking or burning this oil, and def check the extensive ness of the rust, it may be in other area's to, to me this would make it a very questionable buy.....
