Default 98 Crank Pulley Wobble [PICS]

I got a call yesterday from the wifey. I leave work to check it out and find that the crank pulley is loose to the touch. Ok, no big deal. I tried to get a new pulley but no one carries them save Honda and they can't get one until next week!

The pulley bolt was loose! The place to touch that bolt was a shop! My question is can I re-use this pully or is a new one a must?

Is the key slot too damaged?

i would NOT reuse that pulley... Just go to a wrecking yard and pull another Honda one and use that. Dont even waste your money on a cheap local parts store pulley. I have heard of many people having issues eventually non-Honda pullies.

Thanks for the reply, I didn't think it would be a good idea.

I would get one from a yard but don't have a portable impact wrench anymore. Never had any luck getting them off without one. Amazon has a few OEM ones for sale for a decent price so I may as well go with that.

Ya which ever way is the easiest for you. Call around and ask, most wrecking yards around here at least have the option for them to pull any part for you for a small like $10 fee, or even free. Just stick to oem and you will be good.

Just don't buy an oreillys one. I had one on my 4th gen with a oem key and it hollowed it out with in a year and yes it was torqued correct. Got a NAPA one after and ran another honda key never had problems with it after that.

When did you get yours? I called both places and both had it marked as dealer only parts. I guess they stopped carrying them.

Its been a good 4 years since I did mine. I looked on there site and autozone and could find anything looks like they may have stopped carrying them.

Try honda parts unlimited in the link they will have a better price than a dealership and have different shipping so you can get it two day air or next day. They're awesome and quick they also have the key which I would replace doesn't cost much and might as well do it while your in there.

Update:

Pulley came in the mail and got it on in a few hours. The alternator tensioning system was a far larger pain in the *** than I anticipated. Thanks for the replies.

Get a new key and make sure the pulley is torqued correctly? If I recall correctly, the manual says 181lb-ft of torque.

buy a new oem pulley and woodruff key and ensure that the bolt gets torqued to 181 ft/lbs yes 181 ft/lbs thats the factory torque spec. the problem with why everyone has this issue is when the do it yourselfer does his or hers timing belt most people dont have a proper torque wrench to reach 181 ft/lbs the standard 1/2 drive torque wrench only goes to 150. and as the nut loosens off it causes strain on both the pulley and crankshaft ( you might notice a reddish almost rust looking residue on the inside of the pulley and on crankshaft) if you see this definatley get a new pulley and hopefully your crank snout aint to manged up

hat happened to me, I just said **** it bought a lightweight aluminum pulley however the pulley was smaller in diameter so I had to go to the parts store to get the right size belt. Just remember to torque it to spec. 180 ft lbs? I think. To do it locate the flywheel shield under the car, remove it, stick a long screw driver between the flywheel teeth...turn it and It should pry against the tranny bell housing as you tighten the crank bolt back on. Thats how you torque the SOB down
