Transmission Range Sensor - Am I Doomed?
Hello Everyone At Honda-Tech! This is my first post (well question really) ......
I am hoping someone can help me. I have a 1998 CRV and recently have been experiencing problems with acceleration. The problem started about a week ago when I noticed the CEL come on. I went to Advance Auto to have them scan it and a rather ominous sounding code came up -- transmission range sensor. In recent weeks I have noticed decreased gas mileage and more noticeable was an acceleration problem. My tach is way too high when I actually do get movement - normally it should be 1200 or more but now I have to push the pedal down more and the tach goes up to 2k before any forward or rearward motion occurs.
Also, when I do get forward motion the tach revs a lot higher and it seems to take longer to get up to 55 mph. On a few occasions the problem seemed to go away and I was able to drive it to work about 25 miles away however when I would activate the cruise control I noticed the tach would creep up but the cruising speed stayed at 55mph. To get it back down under 3k I would have to deactivate the cruise and then let it slip back down to a normal rpm under 3k and then reactivate the cruise control. This would also occur when cruise was not on. Yesterday I decided to listen for a possible torque converter problem but there is no whining or grinding. Also, the transmission doesn't make any abnormal noise...no whining or whistling. Fluid levels are normal. Today when I tried to drive it in my driveway... I put it in Drive and no forward motion at all until I reved to 2-3k. This happens in all gears...even reverse.
I am hoping I can just purchase a transmission range sensor and put it in myself but I was wondering how difficult this is and if I can even find a sensor!!!! I love my first gen CRV and even though it has 198k I feel like it could run for a long time. I just had the timing belt replaced last year and she ran great until this sensor thing came up, lol.
Please help me. I am trying to save a little money by doing it myself but if anyone has suggestions or ideas I would appreciate it greatly!!!
Thank you for taking the time to read this,

Re: Transmission Range Sensor - Am I Doomed?
What was the actual trouble code number?
Just replacing a sensor doesn't necessarily fix issues, it depends on what is causing it.
