Default Vin trouble. Need help

Ok so I recently bought a crx dx shell.

The guy before me put in a crx si interior including the dash. The title has the dash vin on it....but that does not match the vin thats on the firewall.

My bro called the police department and gave them both vins and the police said none of them were reported stolen or anything.

My dad says ill be fine like this but I really doubt this is legal since the vin on the title does not match the vin in the firewall.

Any advice on what I should do?

Basically, the guy sold you the wrong car, or you bought legally just the dash.

Is there still a vin tag on the door jamb? I would make sure my title matches the vin on the firewall or door jamb. Don't know what the process for changing that on the title though, since I'm sure the title for the vin on the firewall is still out there I guess.

People change dash all the time, so missing vin on the dash is not a big deal, get rid of that one once you have managed to change over to the right vin.

thats one of the first mistake you should have never made when buying a used car.
i would report this to the police. i doubt if you tried to call back the seller he would offer you a refund. obviously the seller intentionally sold you a car that he knew that shouldnt have been sold.

sure people change the dash some time/most of the time but the thing was is that he got the wrong car. he do not have title to the car. definitely something illegal has been done. dont get yourself more involve. report it.

Man this ****ing sucks. Guess I just learned an important lesson. And the guy i got it from said he got it from another guy but he never put his name on the title because he wanted to get it running first. Oh how stupid I feel.

well in order to make it right. you need the title thats on the firewall. so with you having the title to the dash gives you nothing. going to the guy that the title came from can give you some clues as to what happen. but i doubt any one involve in this will give you information why you're in this situation. completely illegal.

im not sure how the laws are where you live but in california, i think you can go to the DMV (department of motor vehicle) and file for a lost title. im not too sure on this though. but call the DMV, or what ever its called over there, and tell them you plan on buying a car with no title and was wondering if you can some how retrieve the title. etc etc. but dont take my word on it. just a suggestion. good luck.

btw carfax does not report the owners name/address or personal information.

I'm guessing since there's no report on both vins the 1st owner guy probably had both cars. The thing would be the car with the dash vin had a beat up body or mess up chassis and he threw the dash into the the other parts car(the one you have) and put the lincese plate there. The car where he took dash off, he probably junked it and did not report it.

best bet is to car fax it and see what happens and track all previous owners and talk or either part it out like said above or buy anthor shell and transfer everthing exceot dash.

how much did u got it for?

googled something for ya.

CAN YOU PURCHASE A CAR IF IT HAS A LOST TITLE?

You could, but it's not a good idea. Without a title, you won’t be the legal owner and cannot register the car. If the car has a lost title, do not hand over any money until the owner goes into the appropriate motor vehicle agency, applies for a duplicate title, and hands the duplicate title over. A lost car title is a recipe for disaster; the person selling you the car could possibly not even legally own the car.

If by chance you did buy a car with a lost title, you will have to go into the motor vehicle office and prove you're the legal owner by producing a Bill of Sale and other documentation the state asks for. Then you will have to apply for a new title yourself.

well im convinced my family are all idiots.

So far the advice ive gotten from family members has been....."yea its fine as long as the dash vin matches your good" "quit overreacting man" "Its not like your car is so special that they will check all your vins"

Sigh

The bean will help you.

Pm me the Vin I will find out if it is clean

If it is clean just go to the owner on the title and request a bill of sale. You are not in trouble for buying this the guy who sold you the car is.
