Fuel pump replacement/gas tank draining
Is there any reason why I can't siphon the fuel from my gas tank in order to replace the fuel pump? I've tried running a hose down the filler pipe and can't seem to get it into the gas even though I have half a tank (is there an antisiphon device in the tank?).
I've drained these tanks before by loosening the drain plug, but its a pain because the gas runs out and down the tank. I don't have a drain pan big enought to catch all five gallons if I were to just remove the plug, so I usually just drain a little at a time in a 4 quart pan and put it in a gas can.
BTW, the fuel pump has 200,000 miles on it and it quit on the road yesterday. I've notice it being a little sluggish on hills recently.
I replaced the main relay with two used ones I have that are known to work and also removed the banjo bolt on the fuel filter and cranked the car over, no gas came from the tank so I'm presuming it is the fuel pump.
Fortunately, I have two used ones in my garage.

jack the front of the car up higher than the front so you can catch the fuel better. When you raise the front, then the rear will lower.

Jack up the front of the car like he said. It will keep it from running all over the tank. I just replaced my pump and thats what i did. I kept 2-3 buckets under the car and just swapped them out as they got full.

Good idea. Thanks. First I'm going to try siponing it out. I have a hand pump with hose made for this. I plan to duct tape a coat hanger to the hose to run it down the filler hose to the bottom of the tank.

I don't want to burn it out because its not in the tank.
Its been sitting around for a couple of years in storage inside my house.

Re: Fuel pump replacement/gas tank draining
When I broke down on the road, I replaced the distributor with a working one I had in my car as a spare and the car still didn't start. Also swapped out the main relay with two spares in my car which I have since tested to know they work fine.
I wasn't getting any gas from the tank to the fuel filter, thats why I suspected the fuel pump (and the plugs were bone dry after cranking the engine over for several minutes).
Once I replaced the fuel pump, I started the car with my spare dist still in and it started fine. I finished up the work and swapped out the distributor with the one that was in there before and it wouldn't start (a little backfire going on cranking over), so I put the spare back in and thats what I'm running now.
Question: Would a bad coil or ignitor tell the fuel pump not to pump fuel?
