Re: 91 Civic Si Track Build - B18C-R|EF9 SIR Converted
Spent a whole night researching oils on many different auto forums as well as bobistheoilguy.com. Never really took this much time to care about it, but I figured now would be a good time to learn and make sure the motor will last and perform well. My top 3 oils were Amsoil Dominator, Brad Penn and Valvoline VR1. There are a couple more oils out there that may be a little better, but for the price and availability, I decided on Brad Penn. I ordered a case yesterday from Chris at Evolved Lubricants out of Jacksonville. Cant beat next day delivery and customer service was great.
Initial Break-In
Shell 30WT Non-Detergent (3 cycles)
Final Break-In
Brad Penn SAE30 Break In Oil
Final Oil
Brad Penn Racing 20W-50
Transmission Fluid
Torco RTF Racing Fluid
Initial Break-In
Shell 30WT Non-Detergent (3 cycles)

What break in procedure will you follow? On a dyno, the street?
Enjoying your thread. I don't recall you mentioning your brake setup, that's a lot of power to slow down.

I believe in the "hard" break-in method. Hard acceleration through 80% of your rev range and decelleration to seat the rings right away. There is a really good article about it, Ill have to find it again.
Initial Start Up:
Let car run for 20 minutes varying engine speed. Check for leaks, etc. Flush Oil. Change Filter.
Break-In(on street):
Multiple 60-100% throttle runs up to around 5-6k rpms, decelerating in gear. Flush Oil. Change Filter. Continue this for a few more cycles, then switch to Brad Penn Break-In Oil for several hundred miles.
I probably will not switch to normal oil until closer to 800-1000 miles. This part I havent decided on yet.

The car has DA front and rear brake upgrade. I will be switching the rotors to either Hawk QuietSlot or DBA with Hawk Pads. Will be plenty of stopping power for this engine setup. I ran the same setup on a K20 CRX that we raced in Time Attack.

That break-in works great if you are tuning the whole time.
If your maps aren't specific to the motor then bad idea.
Why 20w50 and not 0w30?

Thats why I bought the wideband. If the AFR isnt right, then I will take it to be broke in on the dyno and tuned again.

Re: 91 Civic Si Track Build - B18C-R|EF9 SIR Converted
This is the one area of research I am still trying to wrap my head around. The only reason I went with 20w-50 is because it was recommended to me by multiple people. Also it is the ONLY weight I have seen over and over again on the forums being used. Hondas included and by people who are highly regarded in the tuner community. Ill just have to see what my oil pressure is when I start running it.
Ill post back after I learn more about it. Also, If Im not mistaken(dont take my word on this), but I think Ive read somewhere that even though it says 30,40,50, doesnt exactly mean it has the viscosity of that weight, it could be thinner depending on the oil.

That's right, but just visit bitog and read the FAQ.
20w50 is too thick at both ends of the spectrum IMO.

Re: 91 Civic Si Track Build - B18C-R|EF9 SIR Converted
Ive been on bitog and many other forums for the last basically 24 hours straight. Ive seen some of the biggest names in the import community say they run and recommend the 20w-50 even on stock clearance honda motors. Im still convinced 20w50 was a good choice. I wouldnt recommend it as a normal street car oil, but I intend to drive the car pretty hard whenever I do drive it, so I want a more race oriented oil. The 20w-50 is supposed to be good for high heat and high stress(note I am in FL). Im still learning more and more about this stuff every day, so I may change my mind on that. Also depends on the oil pressures my car sees when I start running it as well, thats the real test of which weight is needed. If its too high, Ill just switch it out, no biggie.

Technically, yes it does. Im just trying this one out, Ive seen many people run this same oil with oem spec clearances with no issues. My motor was built looser than oem spec, so well see. As mentioned above, the weight written on the bottle can sometimes be misleading as well.

Re: 91 Civic Si Track Build - B18C-R|EF9 SIR Converted
OP if you have 50w just use it for now.
it's not the end all be all.
on your 2nd or 3rd oil change, try 30w and you should notice the engine response change.
higher oil pressure is better than lower, but there is no benefit beyond about 75psi WOT. with turbo guys using heavier weight oil, (when i switched from 30 to 40w) we make more tq when boost comes on so engine response is not noticable.
My biggest reason for going with 40w was the load of higher tq output from turbo application. Secondly was thicker/quality oil would prevent oil breakdown when it comes to RR. Heat is a big issue for turbo RR cars when you compared it to NA cars.
When my oil temp get near 210f, i start to choose when i go WOT carefully if i don't, it doesn't take many corners before it gets +220f. After 235F, I pit off or drive slowly for 5mins until oil temps come down to 185-190f before I feel safe shutting off the car.
***No i don't run oil cooler, but I will next year.

Getting closer! Registered the car today, man its expensive to register a car these days!
Just need to wire up the wideband and fill her up with fluids and she should be ready to rock!
