Icon2 1990 Civic LX 1.5L: Please recommend a GOOD alternator.

Just inquiring as to your pick for a no-nonsense replacement alternator, the most stable/reliable right out of the box?

I am NOT buying from O'Reilly's, Advance or Autozone. $75 is too cheap for something I need to be reliable and has already roasted 2 batteries. THANKS!

in order from area to obtain....

oriley > napa > autozone > advance auto > ebay > junkyard > Honda dealer...

there not expensive and are pretty reliable.

duralast has always been great, running 3 of them for 5+years on 2. one has been on for 2 years and work fine so far...

OUT OF THE BOX: No issues? I've read horror stories on another site.

Another thing: an Autozone Duralast alt. is $75 but a voltage regulator is $165?
Wow, better lube up my sphincter in that place!

never had a problem with anything for my Honda out of the box from any local parts house (aside from a wheel bearing from napa), though I refuse to buy sensors from autozone,

autozone's duralast alt is a lifetime warranty as well. the voltage reg is something ive never seen replaced on the 20+ 15-23year old Honda's myself and friends/family have owned.

its all up to you though, I have faith in a autozone alt mainly becase its a lifetime warranty incase anything happens, (loved walking into autozone with a snapped in half axle 4 weekends in a row for a free replacement) lol, not due to faulty product either.

Napa, sensor's and other electronics.
autozone for alt, pumps and other misc parts.
and I always stick with oriley for parts such as rod bearings, wheel bearing, piston rings, and internal bolts, oriley tends to have stock on these cars better then napa and ive went though 4 wheel bearings under warranty from napa.

I had 3 Duralast alternators go bad in 5 days. OEM Alt for me now.

I've had zero luck with autozone remanned alternators. For any electrical component, I always go with a remanned denso piece. www.rockauto.com is your friend when it comes to finding a good deal on a quality replacement part.

Parts store alt. are hit and miss. I have had 2 that lasted 3 or 4 months and others that last for years. Just depends on what you have more of time or money. Oem is the best if you are going to keep the car another 5 or 10 years and don't want to work on your car.

Is this from cheapest to most expensive, or worst quality to best quality, or...

I'd think, if you only want to replace it once, get an OEM unit or rebuild your current one. There is an extensive alternator rebuild DIY that I came across one night. It went into detail about which regulator to use, where to get decent bearings...

The conclusion on why remanned alternators are garbage is because they're built with cheap chinese parts. The regulator is often not replaced.

I've lost the link to that info though.

Yeah!

skill178 mentioned he's been running 3 of them 5+ years!

Okay, you guys understand what Bernanke is doing to the DOLLAR since 2009 and how that affects the QUALITY of ANY Chinese product? Since 2008, I've seen most of our imported crap become Less-than-useless compared to pre-bailout 2008 "days of old".

SO, has anyone bought an alternator within the LAST YEAR they are delighted with, paid for with
"Barry & Ben's BS Bucks"?

Canadian EF also made my point for me: The DOLLAR has been trashed against the yuan or whatever it's called. Even my local rebuilders here in Austin TX are all Mexican and I have DECADES of electronics engineering BG (good at rebuilding laptops but no $$$ in it) So by all means....

POST YOUR SOURCING DATA for rebuild parts! THANKS

I'm not seeing any DEALS at Rockauto either. Think what I may do is take the old one out... put in a Duralast and retain the original to disassemble to find if it's just gunk shorting out the regulator or diode bridge. Clean it up, take it back to A-zone for bench testing, then reinstall it. I'd feel much more comfortable with the Mitsubishi unit back in the car.

What SUCKS about a "lifetime warranty" is if the item was any damn good, you wouldn't need nor want one! I mean really, I trust my fellow humans less than a stray dog.

Think I'm gonna try NAPA, I've had better luck/quality from them also.

first link to pop up searching for a "honda alternator rebuild diy"

That's the info I was talking about... I'm confused by what you said.

When you buy refurbished parts from an auto store, like Napa, advanced ect. Generally all they do I'd clean up tolerances, change seals, clean the part, test it and send it out. I know Napa uses ultrasonic cleaning on their injectors, test's if the electromagnet is firing, and turns then down on the lathe a thou or two. I would imagine the same goes for any other part, at any other store. You're buying refurbished parts, not new. They did fail previous to your ownership. Just my $.02

Totally agree, Gummy! The CLUE at Autozone is obvious: Eleven dollar core charge???
That means they're putting ~$5 worth of "work" into it. Now if the core charge was $40 or $50, I'd have more confidence they actually REPLACED stuff in it!

Okay well anyway, I finally got around to hooking my multimeter to the NEW battery:

19.33 VOLTS!!! So with the meter on it, I turned on high beams, defroster, cabin fan, cruise button, hazards, dome light, etc. etc. etc. Brings it down to 14.5 volts, whew! How's the battery? Drove around town: Nice and COOL. That's my "fix" for now until I can get my crippled *** out there, I can't stand more than 20 minutes.

Here's a good source for rebuild kits:
http://www.aspwholesale.com/index.ph...productId=6017

Oh yeah and this is another possibility: Bad tranny ground since I did have it replaced a few years back and the guy charged near nothing because he never did one before. Read "Ezra" comments toward the middle:

Little bit of digging pays off:

Mitsubishi IM267

Mitsubishi IM273

Now that's a HELL OF A LOT BETTER than "Autoscrewed"! Even takes Paypal.

Only source for 101-0211 doesn't instill confidence.
