i notice some have round ones and some have squarish filters
any difference?

its all about the look you like.there is no advantage/disadvantage to the shape of your air filter. your intake piping can only move so much air so you could have a filter the size of a truck and it wont give you any more hp

The filter element and placing has more to do with any benefits in efficiency than does the shape.
