Re: VW flip key (spork motorsports)
haha, i loooveee those keys. i used to play with my friend's jetta key all the time. that would be sweet if you could retrofit a honda key in one. but unless you could hook up the alarm and door lock buttons from the vw to your honda, it would be kind of lame carrying around a non-functional little box

i love my golf's flip key but it would probably be way too much work to put in a civic then it probably wouldnt ever function right...there is just too much to the system

You can swap out the blanks that flip out of the housing and then have them cut for your car. But I checked, and my VW key and my Honda keys are different enough in width and length that I don't think it would work.

Don't VW keys have that inverted key design or whatever it is?

Hrm, ironically enough I have tons of exp w/ VW and MKIV VW keys.
The idea is sound, the VWs actually use a programmable chip inside the key (regardless of whether it's a flip key or a "normal" key) - they ALL have chips inside them (all MKIV (1999+)) and what it does is basically the key cuts are the same with small differenes - but if you try to start a car w/ the wrong key - the wrong chip will be noted - the car will lock down - become unstartable, etc. etc., in order to unlock the computer it has to be towed to VW . Then of course you can only have the chip programmed to the VIN @ VW.
Obviously the civic wouldn't have to worry about this guard feature so you can leave the chip blank and unprogrammed. Though the thing that disturbs me about the process is the way they're cut.
A VW key (at least the MKIV flip keys) isn't cut like a conventional key - they have no markings on the outter edges making it flat on each side (like a ladder) - the cut of the key actually comes from the sides, with a small grinding wheel programmed to the VIN # of that car. They have complex **** with their keys.
Think it goes w/o saying that I've bought new keys there and I can tell you straight up they cost 240 bucks. Though that may be w/o programming - though even so - they're meant to be cut w/ VW's VIN # worked grinding wheel into the side - not a conventional cutter - they're made for dead on accuracy combined with chip ID - not the civic keys where you can probably have a copy made at your hardware store and some keys work in some other locks, etc. etc.
Like i said, you try the wrong key to start a MKIV+ VW, that car will lock the expletive down and won't work AT ALL until you have it towed to the dealership and they reset the computer (and no, you can't just unplug the battery).
So you're really dong a job of comparing high end accuracy w/ tech to low end accuracy w/ no tech.
Theoretically it should be possible - though obviously the key structure is not designed for it as it's 2 rails and the cutting depths are the sides while a conventional key like the Honda's uses cutting depths on the top and bottom along with a rail through the side .
Flip up keys are nice, I love mine on both my MKIV's, but like I said, they're 240 programmed, and I just don't see it happening. Not to mention they have a big blue VW symbol on the back .
IMO if you want flip-up keys you should look into a diff company that maybe uses a different type system for their flip-up keys.
This may sound like a hit on Hondas and I'm sure 101 people will look up the statistics but hey check it.
You're comparing a key intervened with a security system on ALL MKIV Jettas which are amongst the lowest # of cars stolen (in reality, not numbers ) to the 5th and 6th gen civics which are usually in the top 5 - always in the top 25 .
EDIT:
The dealership should ask you for this.
I didn't have the $$ at some time to get it cut but I bought the key - blank, and had a few keys blank and unprogrammed for awhile - then I had to take them back to get cut and programmed when I got some more cash. Though even for the blanks I think they have to ask for it. Like I said, it's tied into the security system, if you try starting a car with it it'll lock the car down.
Just get a friend w/ an MKIV VW to order it if they keep giving you a hard time. They gave me blanks no prob .
EDIT2:
I just realized there's a lot to read there so I'll just bold out the main point.
The VW flip key system is pretty complex and is integrated to the security system on the car w/ VIN # ID in the key (even the non-flip ones). It's also cut a completely different way therefore doesn't have the same structural stability as conventional key and you sure as hell wouldn't want it to break off in the ignition. I'd seriously recommend looking at a diff company with possibly a more simple flip key setup.

Re: (spork motorsports)
the flat blade can be swapped with a regular blade by punching out the roll-pin at the base of the key.
early eurovans have a regular key fitted in the flip thing

Wow, they really knock a dickload on for programming .
Turns out to be like ~240 after programming and cutting (for the flip key, since they're also the transmitters for the unlock/lock/trunk features).
I didn't think they'd be able to cut it b/c it gets cut differently - completely different cutting style.

I'm a bit confused. I thought you were just looking for it to be more luxurious - do you have some other goal out of it?
Are you looking for a place to store a spare key or something? I can tell you straight up the VW key (retracted) is still as long (b/c the key folds in) and about 6 times as wide - it doesn't take up any less room and certainly won't fit in ur wallet.
My friend did what you said, just chopped a bunch of the stock off the key (stock being the part you grab). He stores just the key itself in his wallet (he has a 97 or 99 subaru legacy if it matters). So it's just a thin piece of metal and he's had to use it way too many times when he's forgot his keys in his car .
So are you looking for easy storage of a spare key? Or just more luxurious? Or what? I'm sure you can find something different to work with based on what ur looking for. I'm sure other companies make keys that are cut normally but have flip styles like the VW keys.
Like I said, you g2 remember that the main purpose of a VW flip key is that on the box that the key folds into is the lock/unlock/trunk buttons so it's very very multi-purpose.
