tranny woes
My friend had a jdm gsr tranny installed on his 94 b18b motor. All the seals were replaced when the tranny was out of the car. When he got the car back, there is a problem with the shifter. In order to shift into any gear, including reverse, you have to push the shifter about 2 inches to the right of where the gear "should" be. When you are in gear, there is like 4 inches of side to side slop in the shifter. It's not hard to shift, and it goes in fine at high rpms.
Do any of you have any clue what this could be? I asked this question in the tech forum, and only got 2 or 3 replies in 3 days. Someone suggested shift forks, but wouldnt that narrow it down to only happening when going to one gear? It seems like bent linkage, but that doesnt explain all the slop. The stabilizer and linkage bushings are new and all bolts are tight.

If you install the linkage incorrectly (i.e. backwards, upside down, put the shifter in backwards) this will happen pretty frequently. I can almost 100% guarantee you that it's not the tranny and that it's a linkage related error.

Gonna try to get it up on a lift after class today. I have a couple of ideas now, and I think we will be heading to the acura dealer once we see.

Shifter bushings are fine. We checked the linkage and stabilizer today for bends and they were fine. We thought the spring pin might have been substituted for a nut and bolt when it was installed, but the pin is there. The shifter is installed correctly, as is the linkage.
Are there any internal tranny parts that could cause this?

The shop owner is not very cooperative, we asked him to use the lift to look under the car to check for the problem he created, and he tried to charge us for labor to use the lift. **** that. . .

Its the linkage, I had the same problem with mine... I tried to rig a bolt in the linkage to get the car in gear and moved once.. The shifter will be extremely sloppy, like 2-4 inches of play in all gears and ****.. Jack the car, look at the 'bitch' pin that should have been pressed into the linkage where it couples to the tranny.. From your description i'm 99% sure your problem is the linkage.

Yea, I was reading about that, so I thought that was the problem too. We got under the car, and the spring pin and the circlip are there in place. No bolt.

dude.. the shift linkage is in backwords.. how many people have to tell you that before you understand.. take it out, turn it around, and BAM! problem solved.

Dood, no it isnt. I checked my car which has the exact same linkage and its installed correctly.
This is why I'm asking about internal tranny problems that could cause this.

hmm that sounds pretty illegal to me. do they not warranty any of there work against defect? I mean like as far as i know, if a shop does something wrong and you paid for it to be right don't they have to fix it? you didn't pay for a fucked up installation! don't let people boss you around like that, be more assertive. Start calling them and threatening legal action etc...

If the linkage is good, the only other part that would cause some slop is the shift piece inside the transmission. Here's an idea: Remove the entire shift linkage (yeah, and the PITA spring pin). Can you move the part of the linkage coming out of the transmission by hand and feel some play? If so, it's something inside.
