What stories?
I have never heard of a headbolt ever breaking or snapping or anything. Only thing i heard was stretching when there reused but thats something else. Also i heard about stripping the insides.
If your really paranoid about it do the cheater bar trick and just listen for it. Youll hear a load snap and thats when you know it broke loose. First time i heard it i almost **** my pants its so loud and sounds like breaking a bolt

To prevent warpage, unscrew the bolts in sequence 1/3 turn at a time; repeat the sequence until all bolts are loosened.</TD></TR></TABLE>
You would want to loosen them in a criss-cross pattern working from the outside in. Don't know about anyone else, but I would rather take my time than risk replacing a warped head. You want the torque on the head to be released slowely and evenly. Completely loosening one bolt at a time puts stress on the head. I've always used a 1/2" drive rachet and put some muscle in it. Never had a problem here even with the block out of the car.

also what socket do you use? a deep one or a regular one.?
it seems that the deep socket is leaning on the journal

Deep impact sockets but again just on a rachet. Just put one hand at the pivot to control it. I've also found that pulling as opposed to pushing is usually easier.
