Default shifting is stiff...what can be the problem?

I have a 99 4door civic lx and just recently it's been hard to shift into all of the five gears. Shifting is stiff and it also grinds on the gears. Please help!

could be your clutch.
when was the last time it was changed?
it can also be your tranny. check to see if the trans oil is a nice redish color.

I can still shift so I assume it cant be the clutch and I just replace the tranny fluid last week. its just stiff to shift....any other ideas of what can cause the problem?

How is your clutch fluid? Has the engagement point gotten lower recently?

Try getting under your car and taking a look at your Shift linkage, could need new bushing.. Or could need to lube them up.

x2 on check your clutch fluid. If it gets just a little bit low, it will sometimes not engage fully.

release cable or hydraulic? Did it start to get stiff after you changed fluid? If hydraulic then check your fluid level... you may have a leak. If it started after you changed the fluid you probably are using the wrong fluid.

The tranny fluid that he changed doesn't have anything to do with the hydro clutch. They're two different systems with two different fluid supplies. Although it IS possible that he put the wrong tranny fluid in it.

OP - what tranny fluid did you use? You should use nothing other than Honda Manual Transmission Fluid, although some people say that GM synchromesh works as good, and you can run on 5W30 motor oil without a problem in a pinch.

You should be using dot 3 brake fluid in the clutch reservoir I believe.
