Re: piston slap / rod knock
im trying to rebuild. i didnt use enough oil and now my engine knocks ,could put some lucas oil stabalizer in there itll stop the noise .But not trying to go that way i have my car tookn apart Head , oil pan, and pistons out now im just trying to find the right bearing size
Any exact measurements anyone or does it depend on how much wear the rod has

This isnt really a area where you can just guess. If it is too loose or too tight you can cause problems.

Re: piston slap / rod knock
yeah seriously...
i just bought a 00 ex with only 143k on it and on a cold (ok it hasnt been above about 25 here so i mean cold) start i notice what i think is a little bit slap. funny though it doesnt sound like when my sleeved motor slaps. about 10 seconds after it starts you begin to hear it. tap tap tap...tap...tap tap...tap.... almost sounds like something is a little loose and flopping around for a minute. its not consistant and once the engine runs for a few minutes it clears up back down to normal valvetrain/engine noise. my motor revs up and drives completely normal once warm. ive never had a single make this noise, this is i think the 5th sohc vtec ive had (ok well my vitara motor did but come on now).
i still plan on checking the valve lash just in case. i also wonder if it could be a lost motion assembly...
ham, did you have any luck trying to find the exact source of the noise? i wonder if you can put the front end up on solid jackstands you can replicate driving conditions while having a friend listen closely under the hood...

Re: piston slap / rod knock
I was able to get it in the garage if i revved it up kinda fast. Right between that point of revving up and down I would hear it.
I am very familiar with piston slap. This does sound different. It is definitely coming from the lower end. It has to be piston slap. I think it sounds weird to me because its due to wear, not consistent P2W clearance for a higher expanding piston.
Also wanted to note that I tried pulling 10deg of timing across the board and the noise reduced by a huge amount. Its still there but very faint and goes away as soon as it starts warming up.

the comment about it being drastically reduced when you pull timing would lead me to think its knock/knock related. (though to have your timing 10 degrees too much is out there). also, im pretty sure the d16y's run a knock sensor which should be reading it.....
ive got mine in the garage and have a few hours before the snow hits and i have to pull it out and push my turbo car back in. im going to go see what i can find on mine and pass any word along if i get it to clear up
