rod knock or valve tapping..?
ok so i have a d16y7
got like 140k on it.
b4 it sounded like around 4k there was rattling noise like a bunch of screws rattling around (even tho i know it wasnt that lol)
and now it sounds like a rod knock at idle but isnt consistant with the stroke of the motor.
only here and there as it idles. and around 4k it still makes the sound only its worse than b4.
not too sure but have been around quite a few knocking motors and know when it is but it just doesnt seem like it is so i figured it could be the head. i do know it burned oil/needed new rings. only mods are intake and exhaust but car was turboed b4
any thoughts....?

could possiably be a rod but to check take the valve cover off and and rock each rocker back and forth to see if its loose. your gonna have to put each cylinder you check at TDC compression to know.. usually you can tell just by hearing it if its a loud knock and is sometimes there but sometiems not its probably a bearing that went out but if the knock is there all the time and goes with the rpm of the engine it could be the rockers

may need a valve adjustment. did u just recently switch oil brands? i hear Honda engines dont like some oils and tend to make loud noises with other oils.
I use Motor Craft 10w30 Synthetic blend $2.89 a quart and my engine is dead silent. i like this oil better then when i used Mobil 1 fully Synthetic at $8 a quart.

^lol motorcraft. A Ford product. Ya cant beat a Ford!
But is there a loss in power with the car? There should be a noticeable loss in power with the car.
My old d16y5 used to chatter like a mug, but I"m pretty sure it just needed the valve lash adjusted. Which is pretty common w/ hondas.

Rod knock kinda sounds like someone knocking on a door. You would know for sure if it was rod knock.
Adjust your valve clearance.
Also, the noise is not necessarily inside the engine. Could have something to do with an accessory or drive belt or anything that is moving.

Ya a rod knock is more like a deep, metallic clanking. Lifter tick (or valve lash) is silent but more of a tic tick tick, not clank clank clank.

since you dont have hydraulic valvetrain id rule out a valve issue. if it were a valve issue, you would probably hear it all the time being a solid design. i would be looking elsewhere, accessories(P/S pump, A/C, ALT.
just to make sure, does it do it whether the car is rolling or not?

Re: rod knock or valve tapping..?
sorry everyone i havnt been on in the last 2 days. thanks for the info.
ok well. i can hear it when i start the car up in the morning or after it sat enough to let it cool down. and it starts around 3k rpms. sometimes not til 4k.
its weird cuz i know a knock is more likly to be around the whole power band. from personal experience with my friends cars.
ehhh
and to travis no i use the same **** usually. i mean i burn a quart every 2 weeks or so so i dont really bother to change it. just the filter. knowing this motor didnt even have to last me long since i was doing a swap this summer.

Really, just take it to an oil change shop. They usually know. I was once refused an oil change because of a rod knock and they didnt want to be responsible for the motor finally going.

Re: rod knock or valve tapping..?
Are you sure it isn't a loose heat sheild on your exhaust?
Sometimes gravel gets up there too and will rattle around.
Eliminate the easy options before you jump into the complex ones.

Re: rod knock or valve tapping..?
^Thats what i was thinking. The heat sheild on my cat got loose and would rattle at diffrent rpms. It would make an annoying tapping noise. If you have one of the exhaust manifold/cat combos it could sound like it is coming from the bay.
