I went to go and pop the hood to change my oil and the plastic lever on the hood release broke off. All Im left with is the cable hangin out. Has this ever happened to anyone else? Is this a common prob? Can I buy this piece from honda or do i have to get a whole assembly from a junk yard??

Happened to my brother. Common problem if you don't realize that you are suppose to pull straight out and not up like a hinge. Also if you have a rusty latch mechnizm or it is cold I would guess.

My brother just uses a pair of vise-grips.

Edit: Just to clarity your statement

It is not a lever, it is more like a pull cord.

It's a common problem. people think it's like other civics and try to pull up and not strait out. reguardless of how it broke, no you can't buy the peice from honda. I tried before. Ended up getting the whole assembly from a junk yard for $15. Took about 30 min to change. Good luck with it

Don't worry about it, just learn from this and you will come out on top.

Just take the time to replace it and don't do it again. Mine was broke when I got it but the car was still under warranty so I got it fixed for free. A couple of my buddies are broken also but one uses a pair of pliers and the other can still use his hands to get it opened. It's not that big deal to replace. I replaced one on an Eclipse and it only took me like 20 minutes to fix.

I went throught the same thing.

I think of it as a theft deterent if, you combine it with relocating the hood cable.
Thieves will reach for the handle and find its not there. Doesn't take long to open the hood with a needlenose pliers anyway.
