Im a tick past 200k on 2000 honda civic ex sedan. Was doing some simple maint on her today and noticed the alt and starter look horrible. (16 years in NY and our roads will do that)
anyhow, both original to the car. Both work fine- however I just priced them (Oem replacements) and they aren't terrible. I once paid $700 for an alternator, so now $150 denso looks like a steal.
Anyhow car starts and charges perfect. Whats everyone got in terms of mileage and is it still OEM original to car?
Im weighing if I want to just change em for piece of mind, Id much rather do it when its 75 degrees out then when I got 6" of snow outside the garage.

usually around 160k for alternator, by then the brushes are usually toast. you can just replace the brush assembly for $30, worked for me.
220k for a starter is near the max, solenoid rebuild kit is like 10 bucks or so on fleabay.

other components can fail of course but it's pretty easy to inspect starter solenoid and alt brushes.

Both good at 156k. But I just replaced the alternator because it made a pretty bad bearing sound, still tested good though.

Close to 200k on my alternator and unknown miles on a starter that I got from a 4th gen civic in the junk yard. Both work fine.

But reading comments I should probably plan on replacing them.

294k on both. everything is original on this car, except wear items and the fuel pump.

<p>**** it, I'll bite. &nbsp;Old D series distributor lasted for something like 130k, up until like, two years ago. &nbsp;Cap/rotor replaced 4&nbsp;times in the life of the car. &nbsp;Current B series distributor was the original out of a junkyard Integra with ~150k on the clock, new OEM cap/rotor when I bought it,&nbsp;it hasn't given me any issues.</p>

where do you see the alternator brush assembly for $30? I just watched a video from rebuilderinabox.com that take a denso alternator down to nothing and rebuild it up with all new parts. I was sold, til I went to their website and realize they only sell parts for american made cars -- their kits are about 45 from what I see. They also give you more then just the brushes.

Ive toyed with the idea of rebuilding the starter. I mean for $20 Ill change the contacts just for giggles. The starter isn't really hard to get to, plus it gives you some lee-way when its going bad. In high school I needed a starter for about a year. Instead of changing it, I just carried a hammer with me, lol. The alternator doesn't give you that option.

Sears Hardware stores sell motor brushes. Check them out to see if they'll fit.

I don't know if there is a relationship, but I notice that when the battery is dying, it usually takes the alternator life with it. Now, when the battery is starting to become "weak", I change it right away.

It's probably the reverse - a slowly dying alternator takes the battery with it.

Woo! I win ! Stock alternator and starter

Granted I live in Texas and there is no such thing as rust, it rains twice a year, and my car has never had the alternator contaminated by oil leaks or power steering leaks.

However a vehicle tends to age more rapidly when not driven frequently and left out in the elements. My car has had the benefit of being garage kept all of its life and being driven daily and having any maintenance issues corrected immediately

266,000 on original alternator..just replaced the original starter for one off eBay.

You think like me. At 200k, I would change them both out when you have the time and nice weather. This stuff inevitably fails at the worst possible time.

I change out the radiator at the timing belt interval, because again, I was freaking tired of changing out radiators in the middle of february on a salt covered driveway.

FWIW, Only 155,000mi on mine, but both alt and starter are original.

Both tend to last a long time. If it's a 5 speed don't worry about the starter until it dies. You can always push start it, and honestly they're so easy to change in a parking lot I don't see the sense in replacing it before it dies.

I took my starter apart tonight for giggles and cleaned the contacts, while it showed some use/corrosion- I hit them with the bench grinder and re-installed it. I had the contacts shining when I reinstalled them. The starter is 2 bolts- with easy access to remove. I'll wait until it dies to replace. The guts looked great for 200k tho

alternator 130k, fuel pump around 144k , pgmi or Ecm relay and all the relay on engine hood also!

I know this is old post. I was worried about how long a alternator last on my 2000 Civic, it still seems to be working fine since it's in a perfect location, just behind the engine between firewall and engine...no power steering pump or oil to shorten its lifespan. I rarely use the stereo system also may have factored with a long life, it currently has 231k miles on the orginal alternator and starter motor on my 2000 Honda Civic EX coupe. It's good to know they can last longer than that, I have no idea how much life on the brushes. How would I know?

We recently went on a 2 and half hour trip and made it back home with no issues.

EUDM 1.5 LS EK3 sedan, 208k km and almost all original except the alternator which is 60k old now. It got replaced preventively when the A/C compressor locked up and threw the belt and it got replaced.
