Usually you have to go into another gear then into reverse. Its weird but if i go into 2nd then reverse ill never grind, but if i go straight to reverse ill grind. Its a honda thing.

yepper, sometimes mine won't even go in gear until I throw it in another gear first. Didn't happen as much on my old accord but all the time with the civic.

Me too. Actually, it's more of a rod-driven transmission thing than a Honda thing. You'll find that cars with cable trannies don't do this (your old Accord ) but nearly all hydraulic ones do.

Happens to me too. Thought I had a messed up tranny but then learned it's pretty common. I guess it's the straight cut gear that makes it easier to grind. I always go 3rd then reverse.

Re: grind when putting the car in reverse..can someone help? (variable)
Is that the best way to do it? I always just completely stop, then lightly push it in reverse, and ease of the clutch (still lightly pushing in reverse) and it goes right in, no grinding.

You are at a complete stop right?
If your moving or if your input shaft is spinning youll grind everytime. It has to do with the reverse gear being different than all the other gears. Im not sure exactly why it does that but you have to be stoped and your input shaft cant be spinning.
In my car i often have to shift into first and get the car to move an inch or so, so mine will shift into reverese just something about the way my tranny is. If you only move an inch or so like i said it wont grind well normally dosent you have to get the hang of it...

Same with my Accord, I always throw it into 1st, and then into reverse never grinds.

Reverse doesn't have synchros, and I beleive it's a straight cut gearset. That's why it can be hard to get it into reverse, or cause a grind.
