First Honda! 95 Del Sol S "the salty peanut"

Re: First Honda! 95 Del Sol S "the salty peanut"
As long as its bonded on both sides of the metal it shouldn't ever crack. If it does I'll have to patch it with metal and filler. The rust holes in the wheel arch take time to get right with fiberglass. The smaller the hole is, the easier the job is. Usually...

I'm glad to see someone put so much effort in a car that looked as if it had no hope.
Keep up the build!
And don't forget to get some OEM tail lights

Yes of course, the taillights were just something I did when I was bored, OEM will be coming, and one piece glass headlights, but those will be one of the very last purchases. They are about $1000 for both sets!
I've always been the same way. I would rather take the time to bring a car back to life, than spend the money on a clean one. Long downtime/low cost or little downtime/high cost. I'll put the money in the running gear.
when I first saw it I was like "WTF!" the drivers door loop was hanging on by a dream, surprised it never flew open on anyone driving it.
the name is in memory of my first all out street/race vehicle. Long time gone but I didn't skimp on anything. It was a 94 gt with a 302.....the first week I had it. Seems like funds were abundant back then.

Re: First Honda! 95 Del Sol S "the salty peanut"
Today's work.....
Painting everything that is ugly. I have to consume what little spare time I have with cheap things.(paint, clean, head work). While I budget for a used engine and transmission from a civic vti.
My cousin blew up his d16a6 and is building a zc/z6 turbo with vitara pistons....the point, I might grab his a6 cam, just something until the budget allows a valvetrain splurge. Not sure if its worth it since I'll have to buy a cam gear. "Every penny counts"....or is it "she counts every penny"?

No more p/s or a/c. If someone wants a working a/c system, complete, I have one.
(Post #55, photo 3, top center-ish) how can anyone think this is a good area to plant a labyrinth of brake lines? The new lines will run low, out of sight. The block will go on the pass frame rail under-ish the battery tray, out of sight but accessible.

You do know that when your car is all painted, on a hot sunny day there's a good chance of you be able to see every single one of your repair areas right? When metal gets hot or cold it expands or contracts. Fiberglass moves differently. When you get two different materials that react two different ways under the hot sun you're going to see that difference in movement in your paint. I have seen guys weld patches in the wrong way and you can see the weld line after body work and paint if the conditions are right.
Also, no, your fiberglass won't rust, but if you didn't spray anything inside the quarters and rockers on the back side of those body panels, there is a good chance that your car is just going to rust around the fiberglass patches.
If you have a welder and the ability to use it, then why not cut the quarters and rockers out like you should have and weld in patches instead of being lazy and/or cheap and doing it the right way? I understand being on a budget... but why not save up for nice patches and weld them in when you had the funds to fix everything the right way?
I'm in no way bashing you, but as someone that does metal fab and body work for a living, I have to question the way you're doing things, because anyone reading through your thread that doesn't know any better could encounter huge problems later on with their cars by using your method of repair.

I totally understand where your coming from. Part of the reason was to get some experience with fiberglass. In no way do I expect it to look perfect, but I'm in MA, and about 1 of 20 are without body repairs. They still look really nice, but up close you can see the waves and lines from the work.
The biggest reason, is money. Not that I don't have it, but I don't want to waste it.
quarters 400x2, fenders 60?x2, bumpers 100x2, trunk lid 100+, hood 100+, and all other materials. Looking at $2000 -/+ unpainted. Also the bottom of the radiator support was curbed, not bad, but still curbed. As you can see, that would be a waste. I could buy a near mint condition S model, rust free, for $3000 near my mothers area in NC.
I really do think I'm going to have to use steel on the trunk and lower quarters, since it wasn't bonding well on the trunk. The wheel arches are holding solid. I hit the fg repair with a hammer, no cracks, separation, or dents. Dumb, I know, but I had to see for myself.
Spending money on engines is never a waste though. Not in my case, at least, maybe in others.

Thank you. I try to be as understanding as I can, everyone has their opinions, ideas, and way of thinking. Its hard to read a thread when everybody is "nay-saying" or I think its called trolling here?
I appreciate your interest, and I hope you like the odd engine I've chosen to build.

Re: First Honda! 95 Del Sol S "the salty peanut"
So. I pulled the engine, without the help of a crane or lift. I just reached in and pulled it out, I have a short video I took, in case of an accident.
Anyway, the block is getting cleaned up by a friend, Lawrence crankshaft in Haverhill, ma.
he is also going to be machining my crank. I couldn't find anything on here about what I'm doing in particular, so before I bring in my crank.... Has anyone had a d15b7 crank welded and turned to fit d16 137mm rods? I have a stock a6 rod in going to give him with it.
I know I'll need pistons from a civic vti, if I can't get them cheap, I'm thinking I'll put the crank in a d16. For a de-stroked setup. If you don't know the benifits of de-stroking, I can explain.
I know the vti crank is the same as what I'll have made, but its $2300.

Re: First Honda! 95 Del Sol S "the salty peanut"
Thanks! Definitely coming around. I'm about to remove the dented lower radiator support, in favor of a new, stronger steel box tube style.
it seems as always, my intended street cars end up being race ready haha...
seats and a/c are being sold next week. I have a couple aluminum kirkey seats i can use, just need to make some rails. Pics tonight, if i don't pass out at the shop...

Re: First Honda! 95 Del Sol S "the salty peanut"
Change of plans! I just learned of an interesting event. 24 hours of lemons, and I want to use this del sol. I've already gutted the entire car. Lots of parts for sale. Right now its ready to weld in a cage and some nice bumpers. Then its a track only build...
most of the OEM parts are for sale.

Re: First Honda! 95 Del Sol S "the salty peanut"
I'm currently going through all the wiring. Removing what I don't absolutely need. If anyone knows a link to a good wiring diagram, I would be grateful. I can't seem to find a good one.
I'll have lots of plug pigtails if anyone needs any.
also my trunk lid is for sale. I'd be more than happy to weld in the patches it needs.

Re: First Honda! 95 Del Sol S "the salty peanut"
After seeing all the rust, I'm soooooooooooooo glad I live in Arid-zona. The land of NO RUST! I did live in the eastern part of the US...Kentucky...and the cars from that area(IN, ILL, Ohio, WV, etc) are mostly rust buckets. I knew I wanted a Del Sol from the first time I spotted one on the highway. I hurried home and looked up the 'Del Sol' on the internet as I never heard of them. Loved what I read and saw. Had to have one. After I made the move to Az, I began the search for one. I found a '95 Del Sol in Tucson. 100% rust free. Would not trade it for all the tea in China. You will LOVE your Del Sol once its back on the road. And 'hats off to you' for bringing one back from the dead, or darn close to it. Good luck!
