there
waste of 50 bucks that you could have bought that ignitor with?
or the module?
or the cap and rotor?
****, the whole damn thing
i can get one brand new in the box for 130....no its not honda part... but i bet it'll run its full life with now problems...
or you can get a really damn good used one for 60 bucks if you look around that came off a car that was totalled in the sides or rear </TD></TR></TABLE>
yeah, sure. He could do as you said and fork out the $130 for a cheap non-oem distributor. Then find out it was never the distributor. Then get frustrated and just take it in to get looked at and pay the $50 diagnosis fee. Then find out it was something else like the fuel pump. Next thing you know, he's out $500 because of some shitty advice. suspendHatch has offered some of the best advice i've seen yet. The Helms manuals are cheap and give step by step instructions on trouble shooting with pictures so anyone can follow them.

I say diagnose first as well, even if it is almost definately the distributor... he needs to know how to check in the future. For what it's worth though while working for the dealer I saw as many distributor bases fail as ignitor/coils.

I have a better Idea.. take it to the mechanic who doesn't diagnose and doesn't charge $50-$75 for a no start diagnosis... they will start throwing parts at it.
Fuel pump (parts + labor), spark plugs (parts + labor), spark plug wires (parts + labor), cap and rotor (parts + labor), main relay (parts + labor), Distributor (parts + labor)....
depending on what it actually is and how lucky you get at guessing which part to replace first, will determine how much you spend.
Most of the time, it is worth while to pay for the diagnosis, because sometimes, $50 for diag + $1 part is much less expensive then just throwing a whole new distributor at a car.
When I worked as a technician, we had people that would come in an tell me to replace their alternator, they were sure that it was their alternator. I told them, let me take a look at your car, I will charge you a diagnosis fee, but I find out for sure what is happening. Then I will call you an make a recommendation. They would reply,
"NO.. I'm not paying you to find out.. I know it's the alternator. Just replace it"
Ok, sign this work order, no diagnosis, replace the alternator.
Then it doesn't fix the problem. Turns out the guy needed a new battery.
Batttery + no start dianosis < $120
Alternator + no diagnosis + diagnosis + battery >$400
You decide..

Re: Can somebody help me whats wrong with my civic.
'93 honda civic dx owner> Hello group. aj, my hondx sometimes won't fire up. i turn the key off and then back on and it fires up normal. i don't know what the valve/sensor is called with the vac/electroconnection on the end of the throtlbdy is called,...i get the power loss uphill also. when i take off the cap/diaphram part and tape it w/metal tape it runs ok and then runs better in 1k, when the cel kicks in. i want to check code, but cant get the cel w/key on eng. off. surely this is not an egr valve.. it doesn't have the shape of an egr,...a certifed tech wasn't sure wt heck to call it... i ,. i guess the saying holds true...chiltons or haynes sounds good about now. all answers regarded with caution,
i mean thanks...working on my second honda. oh yes, autozone hadn't a clue as to what this element was called. egrs were 220 no ty. it runs fine with how it is set up. oh applying brakes makes my idle rise when in cel mode. they are posessed.
