transmission fluid
when changing the transmission fluid, what kind and weight oil/trans fluid do you suggest. i'm trying to get rid of the dreaded 3rd gear notchiness. i've heard a few suggestions...none seem good. in the manual, it suggests that if changing fluid to a non honda fluid to use 10w-30 or 10w-40 motor oil. so when changing, the fluid, what would anyone recommend?

now back when i had my wrx i had a problem with gear grinding myself, so i did a "cocktail" which i dont really know how well it will work on the hondas, but it consisted of HD gear oil and a 1 quart of Redline HD shockproof which is as thick as pudding. That fixed everything perfectly. Like i said though i dont know how well it will work on the hondas.

Honda's use a much lighter tranny lubricant.. similar in consistency to motor oil more than gear oil. Honda MTF is the way to go.. they even redeveloped the formula recently.. only other thing I'd use is Royal Purple Syncromax or something along those lines.. alot of guys like the GM syncromesh fluid too..
your owner's manual states: 10w30 Motor oil should only be used in an emergency/temporarily... it doesn't suggest it at all.. in fact the manual discourages it..

If you go the honda route make sure the pn is 08798-9031 not 9016. They tried to sell me the old stuff. My dealership did not have any of the new number.

^^^ You've tried both in a car that is only a year old? We're not talking about b-series cable trannies that have been laying in a junkyard in japan... this is brand new factory stuff..

Is the tranny fluid the reason for the 3rd gear problem? ive had problems with 3rd a few times (notchy) but that was because i didnt put the clutch all the way in before shifting out of 2nd.

It is mostly due to not pushing the clutch in all the way.. lol.. Honda posted a bulletin about our cars in low temperatures having notchy trannys and suggested the new MTF.. I just think they're not ready to admit that it's in all temperatures.. I switched to the new MTF after 5k.. even after that little bit of mileage I had noticed the notchiness or whatever.. new MTF did the trick for me.. this past 5k miles have been smooth as silk..

I'm sure there is, all oil has some weight classification, just not sure what the syncromesh is.

I actually own a 2005 rsx type-s. If you go to clubrsx.com there is a whole 100 page petition of owners complaining about grind/notchy problems and yes even owners with less than 5k's on there cars reported into the petition also. So definately not driver error imo. The rsx has a 6-speed tranny also, search gm syncromesh through honda-tech, good stuff. I was hesitant to put the gm syncromesh in my car at first thats why i went with the new oem honda mtf that i bought from the honda dealership. But i found that the oem mtf is too thin, fine for the first few thousand clicks a then turns to ****. Went to the acura dealership and they use gm syncromesh for most of their cars. I dont think i am ever going back to honda mtf.

GMSM will start to show some notchiness only after about 5k miles. does not last as long as honda MTF. use the new stuff from honda, comes with a white cap. good ****.

I've got over 6K on my Royal Purple with no signs of diminishing perfomance. Still buttery smooth

I had the 3rd gear issue on my Honda as well. I changed to the newer Honda HD MTF and all my problems went away. In addition, using Honda MTF ensures no warranty issues.
