Default Transmission Fluid?

hi, i got a b16 transmission from a 2000 civic si, and i wanted to do a fluid change. I was wondering what type of fluid should i put in it. I have heard that you put motor oil for the fluid, and others say you add some kind of gear lubricant? what should i put?

x2 on the manual trans fluid from the dealer, its cheap and easy to find. motor oil is to thin unless you use really heavy weight and I have never heard of using gear lube.

Honda MTF only, though it's not cheap.

What they said ^^^^

Provided you change it religiously and that the transmission doesn't have any pre-existing problems NOT TO MENTION that you don't beat the poop out of it, you'll be fine .

Although I'm **** about fluid changes on my Hondas and you don't have to follow what I do, I like to change my Element's ATF every 10,000kms (basically at every other oil change because I perform oil and filter service every 5000kms)

Thanks for the help , well as for the gear lubricant, not really sure what it is, its just something that is pumped out of a container into the transmission , etc. well i'll probabliy change the fluid asap, because i changed it about a year ago to motor oil, and it has been running crappy for me, gears wont go in, i had to force it in, before i did the fluid change it ran fine. guess i'll go out and get some mtf. how much do i put in it?

on my 97 civic, when I changed it, it took a little over 2qts of fluid. Just get 3 quarts. I think I paid like 9 bucks a quart from a dealer though, for their MT fluid.

That is what I use all the time. By using MTF for your tranny and motor oil for your engine, if ever you have a leak you will know exactly what is leaking.

Damn! I paid $2 a quart for the green bottle Honda MTF. No wonder some people think twice about it. I just go to the dealer and grab one whenever I need since it's so cheap for me.

I think there may be online vendors that sell Honda MTF at a discounted price.

Older Hondas' owner's manuals say to use motor oil, but these manuals were written before motor oil chemistry changed to reduce the proportion of zinc. Excessive zinc was shortening the life of catalytic converters. OTOH, a certain proportion of zinc is needed for extreme pressure situations such as those encountered in transmission gearing. Honda OEM MTF has the zinc. The Honda OEM MTF also can go much longer between changes than what the old owner's manuals specify. See http://honda.lioness.googlepages.com/manualtrannyfluid for citations.

not really the online prices start at $7 so after shipping it's probably worse. But 8 isn't that bad my dealer charges me 9. It's definetely worth it though. I have used other fluids and the honda mtf is teh best. So far, but I haven't tried any of the really expensive fluids.

:/ baaaaaaaaaaaah too heavy of gear oil... your on the right track with the non synthetic tho... synthetics have too many additives that will eat up your gear box... all the people that say honda mtf ftw! lol well that works or just plain ol' 10w30 non synthetic with no additives works great too... all of the cars we work on run it and it works just fine
