Oil Filter Change for the SI
Hi guys, did a search and all I could come up with is tips for changing oil on the EX/LX/DX, but no SI. I know the R18's have their oil filter in an easily accessible location, but I was changing my oil today, and I got my fresh honda filter in my hand ready to go, and I get up to my car to change it and basically I said,
"****, I am never getting that" and gave up. I got my tiniest friend that I know and even his amazing elastic small hands couldn't bend in a way to change my filter.
Anyone have any real, well in a sense, strategies to change our oil filter? Its terrible. Theres like 5 things in the way, and the only time I actually got the wrench around it, I had to hold it up there, and there was no possible way for me to get leverage, much less replace the filter with the other one.

Re: Oil Filter Change for the SI (ley)
Take passenger side front wheel off, remove plastic cover (two clips), and there it is! Easy as pie and once you do it a few times the whole process of changing the oil only takes 20 mins or so.

Re: Oil Filter Change for the SI (Notty)
When I change mine, i just up thru the bottom and put a Filter band wrench and loosen her up and presto. Takes me 4 min to change filter. Are you using the band wrench?? Thats the best. I have used Honda before and they are great filters, but I switched to K&N. Plus on the K&N they have a 1 inch raised head for removal with a 1 inch socket.

Go to honda buy the oil filter attachment they sell, it fits perfectly onto OEM filters, and costs about twenty bucks, O yea and buy like two cans of brake clean for the mess it makes taking it off...

Yeah what a mess...is there any way to not dump dirty oil everywhere?
Best filter for the money is the NAPA Gold, part number 1356.

Re: Oil Filter Change for the SI (clemsonhatch)
I cut some cardboard and bend it in a ( U ) shape to funnel it in to a oil pan. It helps if you have access to a lift. I would deff try the wheel of and clip pulling idea

Re: (ekb16)
when the dealership does the change, do they actually clean up the mess or do they just do a lil wipe and just go about there business. Cuz im not to crazy about having oil all over my subframe and other parts if you catch my drift.

its really up to the tech who is doin the oil change...he can either take some time and clean it up or just wipe it clean..if he wipes it clean and its still leakin oil and the customer brings it back then it looks really bad on the tech...all the guys i work with, they actually spray it as good as they can with break clean..everytime i do an SI i usually end up taking longer bcuzz of the spraying off and cleaning off part...the SI is by far the most dirtiest when it comes to doing oil changes, if you tried taking off the oil filter on a 06+ SI then you know what i mean..there isnt a way to do it without gettin oil everywhere...i usually use 2 towels, one over the inner axle above the oil filter and the other towel on the subframe...sometimes it helps sometimes it doesnt

The first oil change is the worst. I've done numerous oil changes for many cars and time and time again, the initial replacement for the new cars are the always the hardest. The filters are in VERY tight unless you have the necessary tools to remove them (IE: appropriate filter cap for the filter) and will take additional time, more patience and extra effort.
I started from the wheel for my SI but found that I did not have enough handle space for leverage to remove the filter. The adjustable ring on my filter removal barely fit at the edge of the filter and the angle at which I was at didn't allow the tool to get maximum tension to lock the tool with the filter. Instead, I crawled further back to give my arm and the filter tool the needed room to start the counter-clockwise handle rotation at the 10 o'clock position instead of the 4-5 o'clock position if I had started near the tire.
:S
Hard to explain without pictures.
