speedometer sticking

speedometer sticking
Hey guys I just bought my wife a 2001 Honda Civic EX for a cheap price of $5100 out the door which I was at first amazed by it has only 103,000 miles.
I was driving down the road after I bought it for like an hour and of course i never look at the speed I drive because I am used to certain speeds. I noticed the speedometer would not move for a while. It would stick at 20, then jump to 40, then 60, and it wouldnt go to 90 even though I knew I was going that fast. What should I do? I know this is the best source and I just got home. Could the person messed with the miles like turning them back?

It's just an idea, I would diagnose it properly before you begin replacing random parts. The cluster itself could just be due for replacement.
It'd be a great time for an 03-05 upgrade.

1. push/hold the trip button.
2. turn the lighting switch on.
3. turn the ignition switch on.
4. (within 5 seconds) turn the lighting switch OFF, then ON, and OFF again.
5. (within 5 seconds) release the trip button
6. push and release the button 4 times repeatedly.
this starts the gauge cluster self diagnostics...
the beeper will sound
the lights will flash
the LCD will flash
the needles will sweep "

Update: This is what I noticed this morning. I started the car up in the cold, drove it for 10-15 minutes and the speedo worked fine. After the 15 minutes it started to freeze at 20, then 40, then 60, it would jump to each speed instead of steadily moving to it.
I am going to go look at that site too, thanks!

Dont look over that this could be electrical probs. low voltage will cause Checkengine lights and codes to be thrown such as low voltage in o2's. speed sensor relay.
Test the alt and the batt.

So I tried the steps you posted (besides the ones at that site) and I did not get any chirps or light flashses, I even tried 5-6 times in order. I drove the car for 10 minutes, the speedo worked fine until the car warmed up then it started to skip from 20 to 40 to 60, it only happens when the car is warm. I am going to try the steps on that other website tonight when I have tools to take off the battery terminals.

Ok its resolved. Here is what I did. I followed all the steps that were posted, even the ones on the other website. Those steps did not fix the problem since I knew the gauge was sticking and nothing was resolving the problem I said screw it and took out the speedometer (5 screws total). Once I got the speedometer out I started taking it apart. I moved each needle on the gas gauge, RPM, Temp, and all went back to their original positions fine. The MPH did not work correctly at first it did but then it started sticking when going back to the original spot. It was like a clock problem I had in the past so I said hell let me tinker with it, what can hurt right?
So I pulled on it, twisted it, etc... I then found out if I pressed on the back of the entire pod it would work because it was lifting the needle up just enough, it was not bent it just wouldnt work unless I put preasure on the back. Once I pushed hard enough it started working on its own. I put it all back together and it worked all night. Very weird but I am wondering if someone messed with it and didnt put the parts back together perfectly.
Anyways there was no electrical problem, etc... As long as you take your time in tinker with it comparing to the other gauges you should be able to get it working
