2004 5spd MT Civic
Hey all, this is my first Honda, it is for the wife so she can park her other car for the winter. I have searched and searched for something on this, but come up to a dead end. Here we go:
At idle the car run and revs perfectly fine, no odd noises that I can tell. Once under a load there is a ratcheting sound that increases with RPM through 1st and 2nd gear and starts to go away with the higher gears, also does this in reverse. While driving, if I let off the gas, the noise goes away, if I press the clutch, the noise goes away. As soon as I touch the gas to cruise at the same speed, the noise comes back. I have been told it could be anything from debris in the wheel, CV axles, input shaft bearing, transmission, throwout bearing, nothing, normal civic noise, engine mounts, exhaust leak and valve slap. With only spending a few dollars on this vehicle, I am apprehensive to spends thousands on it to fix a problem that would not NET me a ROI when I am done with this vehicle. If you have any questions for me I will due my best to answer them swiftly.

What all have you visually/audibly tested?
To be honest, if the noise only happens under load, you can pretty much rule out the following:
-valve slap, exhaust leak, engine mounts
I would lean towards an issue in the transmission, as well. If it only occurs when the clutch is engaged (foot off pedal), then its probably your Input Shaft Bearing.

Quoted $1800 to rebuild the whole thing, or $750 for that 1 bearing. Let's say money didn't matter, is there a decent transmission I can buy new and install to the Stock location?

Yeah, these standard transmissions are pretty hardy. May be good insurance to put in a clutch too since the tranny is gonna be out anyways.

Yeah, fairly straight forward. I would strongly suggest getting a service manual. PM me if you want mine, I'm selling the Civic.
First time I did it I took it out the bottom, which involved dropping the engine cradle too. The second time I picked it out the top.

Get the helm. Buy a new clutch. Exedy or Luk only. Buy an input shaft bearing. If you're slow it's a weekend job. If you've done a few, you can knock it out in the better part of a day.

Based on your description I would check the CV joints... under load they make a noise when not under load there is no noise.
If it were an engine problem you would hear it all the time.
A throw-out bearing would make a noise when you press on the clutch, otherwise it is not engaged.
Regarding the transmission you did not mention how many miles are on the car, also do you notice any problem when shifting gears?
