whining sound that goes with rpm
i've been hearing a whining sound when clutch is engaged from 2k rpm and at higher rpms. it becomes high pitched at high rpms. can you tell what the problem is? also, i noticed that when downshifting or just trying to downshift say from 2nd to 1st gear, before the shifter goes in, i'll hear the whining sound kinda like spooling or something.
i have a 99 civic lx m/t. clutch has been replaced and t/o bearing last month. but am thinking maybe it's the t/o bearing.
any ideas?
thanks!

Re: whining sound that goes with rpm
Whining noise is usually associated with gears, AKA "gear whine". Humming noise is usually bearings, but the input shaft bearing (when failing) does tend to make more of a roaring/grinding/rapid clicking noise. Wheel bearings hum/groan & tend to vary in level of noise depending on load (turning, going around a bend in the road). Alternator whine is a common occurrence with aftermarket audio units & sub/speaker amplifiers. Also a failing alternator can make a whining noise.
If your noise is not present when the car is stopped, the clutch pedal pressed, the transmission in 1st gear, and the RPM's in the range in which you normally hear the noise; and is present when the car is stopped, clutch pedal not pressed, the transmission in neutral, and the RPM's in that range, then the noise is inside the transmission and most likely the input shaft bearing. But it could be another bearing inside the trans.

Re: whining sound that goes with rpm
@sir381 - yeah it is. it's relative to speed. i also noticed that it starts to whine when the accelerator is pressed.
@honda_luvr_2000 - is gear whine bad? should I worry about my tranny going out soon?
@boost4days - I put 2 quarts honda MTF in it and the clutch fluid is at max.
Thanks for all the replies guys, appreciate the info.
