01 Civic front end noise-Help!
So I have this roaring noise when I turn/curve left. I thought maybe it was a front right wheel bearing. Well I replaced the front right wheel bearing and ball joint and still have this noise when turning left. Can somebody throw out some other possible things to check? My next thing to check was maybe the half shaft? Thanks
Also:I forgot to mention that I also replaced the rotors and pads as they were due.

I replaced the compliance bushings just a few months ago so they are good. No dust shield or anything I can see is rubbing. I am just wondering about the rightside half shaft or the bearing in the differential where the half shaft goes into. I can't believe I have a bad axle/half shaft but at this point anything is possible.

How do the axles look? Boots okay? No visible signs of damage or a leak?
Any play in them?
Everything else visibly checks out?
Sounds to me like you're already well-underway to narrowing it down. Do let us know what you find?

185000 miles. The axles don't have any physical damage I can see and the boots look okay. HOWEVER, the driver side boot closest to the tranny does have a small fling of oil/grease mark in the area. I was concentrated on the passenger side because everybody said if you turn left and have noise, it is coming from the right side. I am going to drop it at a couple shops this week and hopefully they can pinpoint the exact problem. I don't mind throwing in a couple half shafts($120) but I sure don't want to hear the noise again if I do. Has anybody ever replaced the bearing on the dif before? That has got to be a hassle of a job! I will let ya know what I find and don't stop sending suggestions my way.

Well it has been in to 2 shops not including my own garage. Basically they were not as far as I was on the issue. That's the advantage of driving it everyday and listening to it for hours on end. So what I did this weekend was replace both half shafts because they did seriously need it. The driver side shaft had a leaking boot and the passenger side shaft was kind of loose in the knuckle. That was probably the simplest job I have ever done on this car. They came out really nice and easy and the new ones went back in very good. The car is tight and drives great.
HOWEVER!I still have this noise that is about equal to the front shafts rotating and just doesn't sound good. I don't know if there is a bearing in the differential where the shafts snap into that is bad or just what the deal is. The noise is not bad when you accelerate but definitely is more pronounced when you brake and like before it is there when you curve/turn left more than turning right.
So to recap: new pads/rotors, front right wheel bearing and balljoint, 2 new half shafts and still have the noise. I did check the motor mounts and they all look good. Does anybody have any other ideas/suggestions? My next step is to possibly drop it off at the Honda stealership and pay them to diagnose it. Didn't want to but not sure what else to do.

eh i know someone mentioned fender linings already but what about the fender it's self?
my civic has a noise sometimes in the front right tire area when driving, i finally figured out it was just the dang fender, i can press/pull on it and it makes the same noise...even though when driving it sounds very much like a wheel bearing or bad axle.
might not be what it is, heck it probably isn't, but it's worth a shot.

Re: 01 Civic front end noise-Help!
Update: I still have the noise especially when turning/curving left and if I had to guess myself I would say the differential bearing maybe. (hope not) The reason I say that is because up to this point both shafts are new, both wheel bearing are new, both ball joints are new, and both rotors plus pads are new. It drives nice and is good and tight. 3 garages and 1 tranny shop and nobody can figure out what this noise is coming from. I have done all I can do and luckily all the parts that have been replaced, I have been able to do relatively inexpensive. One thing I did notice is one of the motor mounts has a tiny little crack in the rubber. I will check on these further but right now I have to drive the vehicle. If ya think of something else for me to check just hit reply as now this is becoming a game that I am going to win.

Well, I seem to have a very similar issue. Been sounding worse and happening more frequently the past few weeks. Interestingly enough, the noise seems to happen sporadically and reguardless of conditions. Next time it quits raining I'll check compliance bushings and axles. Also I can feel a moderate vibration in the steering while the noise is happening. It sounds almost like maybe the passenger side axle is binding for some reason. Any ideas?

Possibly Diff gear in the Trans axle sounds like a lash problem if you can load it and its noisy unloads it and it goes away. You mat try a Tran’s fluid replacement. And I think that your problem will be resolved.

Changed the trans fluid today and still has the noise. Good idea though, thanks for bringing it up. A couple of really fine metal shavings on the drain plug magnet but nothing outstanding. I have located a shop not far from me that only works on Hondas/Acura's so it is headed that way. They come highly recommended. I am done and $tumped.

Well, this might sound kind of embarrassing but I did have them checked at one point during this saga. The front left tire had an impact fracture. You couldn't hardly see anything wrong with it but the best garage in town figured it out. The best part is I bought road hazard warranty when I got the tires so it only cost a couple bucks to get it replaced. Slapped a new tire on there and the issue is all done. No noise at all. Car runs great as it should since the front end is loaded with new parts. Thanks for everybody's help and suggestions. Case closed!
