Icon3 01-05 Honda Civic Manual Trans Noise

Many of you guys are complaining about a noise coming from the transmission. I also suffered from it. The noise you are hearing is the input shaft bearing inside the transmission case. I am a honda technician, and there is a service bulliton being sent out to honda dealerships about it. i have already done a couple of them, including mine. I figured i would write this up to save a lot of you guys time/money (for you diyers). Many people might try and tell you the noise is the throw out bearing, maybe it is, but 99.9% of the time it isnt.

Heres a good way to desifer the noise.

1. if you are in neutral, you will hear a rotating grinding noise. push in the clutch, it should go away. in any gear you should hear it, but what i experianced, when i added load the the transmission, the noise either stopped, or got quiet. If you have the clutch pedal pressed in (dissengaged) then its you INPUT SHAFT BEARING $40 from honda.

2. If you hear the noise when your clutch is pressed in, it is your THROW OUT BEARING

If i were you, i would fix this yourself. its honestly not hard to pull this transmission. the only problem i had is there is a bracket on the top of the bell housing that holds a ground, and the slave cylinder line. in order to remover the trans, you have to bend the bracket pretty much in half, or the trans will get hung up on this. another thing, since you are inside the transmission, you should buy a clutch kit, chances are if your bearing is making noise, then your clutch wont be very pretty. Mine had fibers hanging off, and was way past the certification limit.

when you are putting the transmission back together after you replace the bearing, make sure EVERYTHING that was inside the transmission when you took it off, is there when you are putting it back on. i know it may be a stupid thing to say, but i have seen a lot of techs in my shop, not put a certain part back inside, and screw the whole thing up. There is a spacer at the top of the main shaft, and it causes all the gear sets to mesh, and shift correctly. if you dont put it back on, you WILL and i repeat WILL need new gear sets. if the spacer isnt there, it will cause the gears to grind together, the syncros will squish, and all the metal flakes from the grinded gears will get into all the bearings inside the transmission causing every single bearing to make noise.

Get a manual, do it right the first time. If anyone needs any part numbers or anything, let me know i can get them for you.

When i took mine apart there were two washers/shims. I had Mitchell on demand to verify the location but yeah that is a must. Its not terribly hard to do just time consuming. If your replacing the input shaft bearing also make sure to replace the seal. Might as well do it while your there and its like 10 bucks. I let my bearing go for so long that it allowed the shaft to move around and let fluid into the bell housing which means new clutch and mess lol.

I am confused.

If you hear the noise with the clutch pedal in, it's the throwout bearing.
If you hear the noise with the clutch pedal out, it's the input shaft bearing.

Is this right?

I get noise but only when in gear and moving. The noise disappears in between gears (when the medal is in).

So you had to bend the bracket on the top of the bell housing to pull the transmission from the top? Can you just remove the bracket so you don't have to bend it?
I once had to pull both engine and transmission to replace the transmission. Now after 50k miles, the input bearing is starting to make noises. So you are saying I can pull it out from the top?
Thanks.

yes you can remove the bracket. and no. its much easier to pull the trans from the bottom. i did this very thing a few months ago and it was not hard to do at all. just time consuming. i ended up replacing the input shaft bearing AND the throw out bearing. might as well being that they'll both go out sooner or later. also, when you have your trans out, it makes the job much easier if you take pictures along the way to help you remember which parts go in their correct places. this is especially helpful when you have all the gears exposed. trust me on that. haha

I havebeen wrestling with the manual trans in my 02 civic of all evening and cannot get it to go out the bottom. Any more tips on that process? My trans and motor are 100% separated but the trans is just trapped in the pocket between the motor/inner fender/frame rail

take the clutch kit out first. then try removing the trans. you're probably better off removing the clutch kit and replacing it with a new one anyway since you're taking it apart... and while you're at it, take your flywheel out as well and get it resurfaced before putting it all back together.

10-4 I was try to get around not taking the clutch out but you are right, may as well since I have it apart and the previous owner informed me this one has about 40K miles. Is everyone running afternarket bearings, seals, and transmission internals or OEM honda parts? While I'm in there my I'm fixing 3/4 and 5/R.

go with honda oem. and also go with the original exedy clutch. its pretty cheap on amazon.com honestly. and WAY worth the money. you can look u pthe part number on the exedy website and then just search for it on amazon.

You gotta drop the subframe, you can **** with it all day and make no headway, Support your engine and drop the frame, trans will come with.

^^ You definately need to get the subframe out for the em2 ^^

You'll probably want to consider tossing the splashguard and replacing it along with new plastic snaps

Thank you all for this very helpful thread. I recently bought an '03 Civic Hybrid from a used car dealership, and I stared noticing this a couple of days after I bought the car.

Anyway, the Honda dealership I had inspect the car completely failed to diagnose the issue. (At least they agreed that there was some sort of noise.) This thread really helped me sort this out. @lilrak72: you were completely right about many people telling you it will be the throw-out bearing.

I'm not much of a DIY'er so I paid ~$2000 to get this replaced from a mechanic. The only good part of this was that the car was under a 50/50 warranty, so my bill was $1000.

The clutch was also burnt, as judged by the smell produced after a few minutes of driving. I had this replaced as well while they were replacing the input shaft nearing. For a few weeks after I was still able to smell the clutch, but now the smell is slowly diminishing.

Thanks again for great information!

I have an 05 civic Ex m/t with 100k on body and transmission and about 60k on motor
I've noticed my input shaft bearing was making noise
Over this past weekend I pulled the tranny opened it and replaced the input shaft bearing, sealed it back up and also changed the pilot bearing, clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing
I put it all back together and still get the same noise when the clutch is not pressed!
What could it be?

good day, thanks for the very helpful info that you posted, im newbie here and i have a honda 2005 gli (AU) ver d17z1 non vtec, i already got that noise before but it didnt bother me coz we tried to open the gearbox to change a stage 2 clutch kit and a lightweight flywheel and at the same time check the bearings inside the gearbox, whats bothering me now is the clonking noise (sounds like a pipe hitting a hard plastic) i only hear it when im on neutral and if i put a rev and stay on 2k rpm or even 1.5k it gets quiet, its not that loud or noticeable but i heard that sound after we tried the clutch kit and the flywheel on how quick the rpm shoots up, the only thing is i messed up when i missed gear from 3rd gear going to 4th instead my hand slipped to 2nd and worst is i stepped on a full throttle which makes the rpm go wild, when i noticed the pull back of the car i quickly put it back to 4th and continue running, after that everytime i sit on a stop light i hear that annoying sound, i can hear it clearly if the windows are all closed and if im on the driver side, i also tried listening to it sitting on the passenger side but i cant hear it, tried listening to it in front of the engine and all i can hear is the valves clicking, a little bit of sound on the side fender where the gearbox is near, if you have any idea of what is going on with my gearbox or maybe i misjudged the gearbox instead of engine or something else thats rattling, your response and analysis will be very much appreciated.
