Default help with engine

I have a 94 Honda accord that just started vibrating and hesitating during 1st gear acceleration. Once you speed up it runs normal. also this morning when I started it it was smoking out the tail pipe until I started to drive and it stopped. What could be going on here?! CEL has never worked so can't get any codes

Start with getting the cel bulb replaced, which isn't really that hard at all. Then check for any codes.

What color was the smoke?
Does it smell like anything? Sweet would indicate coolant.

Don't you have to remove the dash for that?

Black smoke indicates running rich. Which may mean coolant temp/O2 sensor issue. White smoke, is probably actually steam, which indicates coolant leak. Check your coolant, make sure you're not loosing level.

To replace the bulb, there's a few screws in front of the gauge bezel. Undue those, along with the plastic bezel. Cluster comes out

I only saw the smoke that one day. Starts up fine and after acceleration will run smoothly and fast. I'm a female so not really comfortable with taking the dash apart to fix the bulb.

On the 94-97 you have to remove;
  • Driver side knee guard(dash under steering wheel)
  • Arm rest
  • ash tray
  • Center console radio surround
  • Radio
  • HVAC controls/surround
  • And then the gauge cluster

And when you get to the gauge cluster, do not touch the fuel gauge/unbolt it. Only remove lexan and covers from the front. Do not unbolt/unscrew any gauges.
