I just pulled the valve cover off my 88 DX A20A1 to change the gasket and it was looking at an almost new valvetrain. not the slightest sign of sludge or build up. generally speaking tho 3k between changes is a waste of money, especially if you are running synthetic or if the motor has under 100k. unless you beat the engine very hard most avg drivers would be just fine with 5-7k mile intervals. BMW actually doesnt even require intervals until every 10k

What exactly happens during the break-in period of a new engine?
on a 2005 era engine just about nothing. you should see how some "brand new" engines get treated druing snow removal, idling for 8+ hours at a time, getting started after sitting overnight in almost 0 deg weather and then being immediately redlined with the traction control off for 15-30 seconds to get out of a snowdrift...and they still last the customer 150k+ miles
on a 2005 era engine just about nothing. you should see how some "brand new" engines get treated druing snow removal, idling for 8+ hours at a time, getting started after sitting overnight in almost 0 deg weather and then being immediately redlined with the traction control off for 15-30 seconds to get out of a snowdrift...and they still last the customer 150k+ miles

Just because they cars/engines are abused by dockworkers and dealership stooges doesn't make it right.
I've seen UOAs on newer cars, including dozens of Hondas. Elevated wear metals are plain to see for the first 10-12,000 miles. And the wear patterns for new motors varies greatly among different brands.
