Default broken headers studs HELP!

So as im taking off my old exhaust manifold i move to the next nut to take off and realize its broken off. theres two broken ones. one on the very right hand side, and one on the very left. idk if/how you can replace them cuz its creating a massive exhaust leak and sounds terrible. one can be taken out with a pair of vice grips, the other needs drilled out. a shop told me they were gona have to pull the heads off!!! nooo way on earth am i letting them do that. (why I do the work myself lol) lemme know what im up against. thanks!

the shop likely wants to pull the head off so they can put it on a machine to drill out the broken bolt.

can you do it yourself? sure, you can try.

the way you will probably want to do it to drill a hole for an easy-out and then using an easy-out and tap handle back the broken piece out. That's easier said than done though, I don't like easy-outs personally. I've used them and had some luck as well as some breaks. Now if you break that easy-out in the broken stud you'll have to take it into a shop to be drilled out with a carbide drill, so don't break it.

the other way, which is the way the machine shop would probably do it is to find out the thread diameter and pitch and get a tap and drill for that size. Then you'll want to drill the broken stud directly on center and stay going parallel with the stud as you drill. This is difficult to do by hand and that's why the shop suggested taking it off so they could put it on a machine.

If all else fails you could drill it over sized and put a heli-coil in there for the correct size thread that was originally in there.

If you can weld, try and weld a short bolt with a good head onto the broken stud. You'll want to be careful with the heat since it's an aluminum head, but you can sometimes do it. If it fails, you are no worse off than when you started.

EZouts were clearly designed by Murphy, In my experience, they break off more than they don't

I would try using a driller in the reverse speed.

It worked out for me

They have a product @ Walgreens for $20. I forget what it is called, (its been on tv) like the drill-it or something. I would give that a try.
