Default Help with my 1990 civic.

My timing belt broke yesterday on my car I was wondering if my motor is toast? If not is it ok to buy a kragen timing belt or an OE belt? Thanks Dan

Normally there is engine damage. You will need to get another belt on it and do a compression test to see if there is any damage.

You could also pop the valve cover off. If a valve is bent it will be stuck partway down, and there will be a noticeable gap under the cam lobes of the problem valves. You also wouldn't get very far with a compression check (and you'd have to do the timing belt first) if there's damage.

On that engine I think you have about a 50/50 chance, which is much better than most.

Even though these are interference engines you have a good chance of there being no damage. But you're going to have to either pull the valve cover, as mentioned above, of the head.

Thank you guys for the help I'm going to go buy a timing belt today and take off the valve cover this weekend. If they are bent is it easier to just buy a new head?
