Default 1998 Honda Civic Automatic Transmission Problem. Need Help!

Hello,

Model: Honda Civic 1.6 Automatic 4d, 1998, LX.

It has 114 000 miles. Transmission oil's not been changed since i bought the car (100 000 miles).

problem:
It starts after 10-15 minutes of driving. At 1st gear I got high RPM and the car behaves like in neutral. I got to push on gas very hard and force to get second gear. Other shifts are fine. So, problem is when the car gets warm and tries to change from 1st to 2nd.

I think all caused by transmission oil or oil filter.

Tech manual says:

Poor acceleration flares on starting position off in:
Stall rpm high in D4, D3, 2 position.

possible causes:

1. Low ATF
2. ATF pump worn or binding
3. stuck valve Regulator
4. Shift cable broken/out of adjustment
5. ATF strainer clogged
6. Torque converter check valve stuck.

Thank you in advance.

Need more info:
1. Is the D4 light flashing, or CEL illuminated?
2. Does the ATF smell burnt?
3. Have you checked all your pressure switch couplers for a tight fit (mainly 2nd)?
4. Have you removed your position sensor at all?
5. Have you flushed the tranny, or at least changed the fluid twice?

Sounds like it might be your kickdown cable.

Hi,

Could you provide more details? Why you think that it is a cable?

If nobody has messed around under the hood, there's really no reason for the pressure switch to come loose on its own. But it's worth checking. The 2nd pressure switch should be located on top of the transmission, underneath the throttle body. Dealer techs sometimes forget to reconnect this switch if the tranny's been replaced. A loose pressure switch will not throw a MIL or CEL.

If all else fails, you may just have to take it in to the dealer. Mess around with them a bit and ask them if their DPSM can give a goodwill authorization for the repair.

Hello all,

I was told that there is low pressure caused by friction burnt. Can someone tell me what does it mean and how serious it is?

Thank you.

For starters...There is no kickdown cable....

These are controlled by a linear solenoid not a kickdown cable

These transmissions usually suffer from two things:

A.) Broken spring in the Valve Body in which Honda makes an update kit for this. This will be done during a rebuild if the shop doing the build is aware of this kit.

B.) A cracked 1st clutch drum. This is also very common in the 3rd clutch drum. This will cause slippage like you are experiencing since the crack will allow a decrease in pressure.

Considering the mileage and the symptoms...I would say its dead in the water.
